Inclusion in sports has had a lot of winning moments in 2021, but it hasn't come without a fight and one of the battleground has been the state of Texas and now 5 attempts to legalize discrimination of transgender students who just want to play. Karleigh sat down with Texan legislative analyst and activist Ash Hall, who gives us an inside view of all those messes down in Texas. Hall also delves into a sci-fi "What If". What if Doctor Who was a Lone Star? Then we look an ambitious step to make the fitness and training spaces better spaces. Karleigh interviews Meghan Crutchley, a non-binary trainer and queer health advocate who is building a curriculum with the goal of making learning about LGBTQ inclusion a piece of the process to certify trainers and fitness pros. This week's Trans Sporter Room continues our deeper look into trans athletes stories that many haven't heard, but need to hear. In 2011, the NCAA began their transgender student-athlete policies. That same year, a volleyball player at Division III Purchase College in New York stepped into their truth as a transgender man, and said that they want to play on the men's team in the sport -- After playing two years on the women's team. The NCAA provided a pathway, and Taylor Edelmann walked it, not only becoming a player, but also a team captain. Save a few articles his senior year, including one by Outsports, what happened largely flew under the radar. Edelmann was among the first. Karina Manta is one of the few publicly out LGBTQ athletes in women's figure skating. Along with her out gay ice dancing partner, Joe Johnson, they make up a particularly prideful duo. Last week, in an ESPN article advocating for better living conditions for minor leaguers, Giants farmhand Kieran Lovegrove came out publicly as bisexual and revealed that he had been out to teammates since 2019. Needless to say, this was a huge thrill to discover. Today, Kieran joins me for a a fascinating, intellectual, and inspiring discussion about his coming out experience while riding the buses in Minor League Baseball. After hearing about how many of Lovegrove's teammates responded positively and encouraged his journey toward embracing his true self, I have never felt better about the direction in which baseball is headed. But in order for the sport to fully realize its potential, it's also going to have to start paying its minor leaguers a living wage and providing more humane living and training conditions for its next generation.
