30/06/2021 Duração: 46minWith the Tokyo Olympics coming in July, some are looking at August 2 with a weather eye. That will be the day of the women's 87+ kg weightlifting competition. It will also be the day that New Zealand's Laurel Hubbard will step into Olympic history as possibly the first transgender athlete to participate in an individual event at the games. It is a moment she has been working for since 2015. It is also a moment that some don't want to see happen. Amid the growing "debate" over transgender rights is the often forgotten human variable. Transgender athletes are often casted in a light that dehumanizing. Dr. Jaimie Veale, a senior lecturer in psychology at Waikato University has studied such issues at length as a board member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), and a founding president of the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA). 3SYO #80: Yankees Perfunctory Pride with Joshua Diemert
25/06/2021 Duração: 52minAs 27 world championships would indicate, the Yankees do some things right. But when it comes to Pride Nights, they're still in a rebuilding effort. With that in mind, I'm joined on this episode by Yankees blogger Joshua Diemert (Pinstripe Alley) to discuss the Bronx Bombers' efforts to celebrate their LGBTQ fanbase. The Yanks have only been holding Legacy of Pride since 2019 and, as Josh testifies, their lack of experience shows. This year, Yankee broadcasters awkwardly offered up the toothless euphemism "the events at Stonewall" when discussing the riot that kickstarted the Pride movement. We dive into what that means about how the team still can't confront the un-Yankeeish aspects of LGBTQ history and how their approach to Pride is more about checking off a box on their baseball to-do list. 3SYO #79: Fernandomania! with Jesse Sanchez
18/06/2021 Duração: 38minThere was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando! And by "that night," I mean "all of 1981." Today, we're throwing back to one of the greatest seasons in baseball history: Fernando Valenzuela's rookie year with the Dodgers! And as MLB.com reporter Jesse Sanchez enthuses, it was about so much more than just great pitching. Valenzuela was an international sensation. Seemingly arriving out of nowhere, Valenzuela became a focal point for the Mexican and Latinx communities--at the beginning of the Reagan era, no less. He seemed to top himself every start with a streak of dominating performances, eventually leading the Dodgers to a World Series championship. And with every shut out, he opened the door wider for the Mexican community to become lifelong fans and showed the baseball establishment that a Latin American could become the biggest star in the game. Click here to read Jesse's excellent piece about reliving the Fernandomania phenomenon. You can still hear the awe and excitement in Je

3SYO #78: The Cubs Are Wiser with Adam Mamawala
11/06/2021 Duração: 50minThis was looking to be a rough week for the Chicago Cubs with seven games on the west coast against teams with the two best records in the league. But they weathered the storm and held their own thanks to discovering baseball's newest market inefficiency... Wisdom. Patrick Wisdom, to be precise. Today, I'm joined by friend of the pod Adam Mamawala for a crossover episode with the Away Games Podcast and we're talking about the kind of Wisdom that has lifted the Cubs through their most difficult stretch. Specifically: if you hit eight home runs in your first 15 games, you are very wise. We also break down Anthony Rizzo holding steady through a home run drought and still putting up very good production, Kris Bryant remembering that he's one of the best damn players in MLB, and Javy Báez being a genius even on days when he doesn't get a hit. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it might be a good idea to lock up one or three of these guys to a long term deal and pay them what they're worth. Which is why I don'
