I first saw women play hockey in 1995 when the IIHF hosted the 1st Pacific Rim tournament in the rink I worked. National teams from Canada, China, Japan and the United States. While Canada would win that tournament my love and support for women's hockey would grow from there. This week my guest is the Executive Director of the National Women's Hockey Players Association, Anya Packer. We started the conversation about how she became a fan of the sport, her playing career as well as her role now. Being an LGBT podcast we obviously also talk about her coming out, her struggles with mental health and how her team helped her in the coming out process. While youth football continues to decline, more and more girls are playing the sport.  This week I am talking to Holly Custis. Holly has spent over 14 years playing tackle football, playing both sides of the ball and most positions. We spoke a few weeks ago about her coming out, growing up playing sports and finally playing the sport that she fell in love with as a kid. I first heard about Joe when he wrote an article for Outsports.com where he spoke about his coming out, how the Pulse nightclub shooting affected him and the call with the You Can Play organization gave him hope. This episode we talk about his cross country and track and field career in college at George Washington University. Joe has also been fortunate to work at the 2006 Winter Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics and that helped him get hired on for the New Jersey Devils/Prudential Center. Originally posted on September 17, 2019. I have followed Micah for a while on social media and was excited to get him on as a guest on the show. Not only does he have a life that is unique to some as a man who came out in his late 30's after being married for years with two children. He was also a high school coach where he worked with his wife at the time. His coming out has been a long process, even managing to get through his own decision to try gay conversion therapy with his pastor at a local church. I love how his coming out has helped students and others he has worked with, not just with sexual identity but with other common teen problems. I got together with Athena Del Rosario a few weeks ago in our local library and had a discussion about her life. Transitioning in the 90's was tough without doctors and the internet but Athena found a way to start the process before seeing her first doctor. After the 2008 recession, Athena used a short stint in the adult film industry to help pay for her transition. She would return to college in her late twenties and return to sports.  During the podcast we do spend about 10 minutes doing free advertising for the beautiful UC-Santa Cruz campus (Go Banana Slugs) and we talk about her involvement with the potential olympic sports, Beach Handball. I loved talking tennis this week, especially as we begin the US Open the night before the release and Brian Vahaly was a rad guest. During our one hour conversation, which was recorded while his boys slept and he was outside, we speak about his playing days. Part of that conversation includes his junior days, college days at University of Virginia as well as his ATP career. Unfortunately injuries cut his professional time short. As a kid my family would all go and watch great USA vs USSR volleyball matches and from there I fell in love with the sport. This week I host my second person involved in volleyball when I speak with Oklahoma Assistant volleyball coach Jake Barreau. After we talk about Jake coming out and his volleyball coaching we talk about a few other things important to him. First being his wonderful husband Hunter and their marriage. I also ask about his involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters and his own "Little",Ian. After impressing some coaches he ended up playing college ball at Cal. We talk about all of that plus spending time with the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs. Throughout his time in the NFL he struggled to come to terms with his sexuality all while becoming addicted to pain pills, pills that were prescribed to him by NFL teams.  This episode we do get a little dark and talk about Ryan's suicidal thoughts and depression.  What we touch on in this episode can be read about in detail with his new book 'My Life on the Line'. Over a month ago Andy Brennan came out on Instagram telling the world that he was gay. What is so surprising to me is that it was less than a year that he really accepted who he was. This episode we talk about growing up in Australia with a loving family, playing sports and continuing to progress in his football career. We spoke late last week, and this is coming out only a few short days from recording and right before he scored his first goal and tying the game right before the half.
