On the penultimate episode of the Chaise Lounge season 23, Nick talks to Tish Mills of Harmonious Living by Tish Mills. Tish tells the story of how she came up with degrees in both behavioral psychology and design and she uses both every day, and she tells Nick about the role showhouses play in her career.

On the first Chaise Lounge of October, Keia McSwain joins Nick in the studio. McSwain is the president of the Black Interior Designers Network and principal of Kimberly + Cameron Interiors.  Both of these roles are responsibilities she took up after her boss and mentor Kimberly Ward died of cancer in August 2017. Today, McSwain designs and manages projects all over the country with Kimberly + Cameron and works to build an expanding network of black members of the design community to pool and share resources. The Black Interior Designers Network currently holds one conference per year but may expand to more as the network grows. Today’s Chaise Lounge showcases Miami designer Darla Powell of Darla Powell Interiors. Powell is a former Miami cop of 19 years who decided to follow her childhood compulsion to redecorate into an interior design career in 2017.

Today on the Chaise Lounge, Nick talks with two guests, the co-founders of Pillar and Peacock Adrianne Bugg and Brandeis Short.  Adrianne Bugg spent five years in finance before eventually joining up with Brandeis to start the firm. When she told her mother about it, it turns out she had saved her past sketch books for the day her daughter figured out the direction she needed. Bugg’s direction dovetailed with Short’s. Brandeis Short majored in fine art and dance and needed to find a practical channel for those early career choices.  So in 2011, they founded Pillar and Peacock together. Wolf fell in love with art as a child but only found it as a career after years in marketing. Now she combines both skill sets in her business.  Wolf started her career double majoring in marketing and fine arts. She remained interested in design but followed the marketing path beyond undergrad because there seemed like a greater and more stable demand for marketing. She worked in marketing for years, even managing a company’s QVC-handling arm. But eventually she went to Parsons School of Design at night to get certified in interior design so she could get back into more tactile arts.  She learned everything she needed and got started, founding Karen B. Wolf Interiors in 2009. Since then, Karen B. After realizing she wasn’t cut out to work a graphic design job in a cubicle, she took a job at a paint store where one client appreciated her color recommendation to heart and wanted more even more interior design from Davenport who was only just realizing she might have the knack. Then, when her daughter was 9-months-old, she went back to school to learn interior design.

Rokahr is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and after a career as a film producer, she returned to her roots and bought the then-34-year-old Snob Shop consignment store before also establishing Trouvaille Home which serves as a retail option for antique and custom pieces.  Rokahr found design as a second-and-a-half career. She spent time away from film to work as a publicist for a few years before returning to show business and then transforming her life into what it is today, where she curates unique and beautiful pieces of in both fashion and interiors.
