Background: Towards the end of his life David goes through some very painful situations; Famine, War, and his own foolish Pride. Background: God provides rest for David. David is then motivated to build the LORD a temple. Background: After the mourning period of Saul was over David starts his reign as King. However, his kingdom starts with division.2 Sam. 2:1-7 “David inquired of the Lord…”2 Sam. 2:7-11 “But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army…”2 Sam. 2:12-3:1 “Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David; and David grew steadily stronger, but the house of Saul grew weaker continually.”2 Sam 5:1-25 “When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek out David…”

Background: Saul almost caught David but was called away to a battle with the Philistines. David flees to the land of the Philistines and King Achish gives him the city of Ziklag. David and his men live there for a year and four months. 1 Sam. 28:1-3 “Saul had removed from the land those who were mediums and spiritists.”1 Sam. 28:4-6 “When Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him…”1 Sam. 28:7-19 “Seek for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.”1 Sam. 28:20-25 “Then Saul immediately fell full length upon the ground and was very afraid because of the words of Samuel”

Background: After David is anointed to take over as King, he kills Goliath and makes friends with Saul’s son Jonathan. Saul tries to kill David and David flees to the wilderness. David gathers his men and lives on the run. David spares the life of Saul twice as he hides in Philistine territory. 1 Sam. 23:1-6 “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah…”1 Sam. 23:7-8 “Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand…”1 Sam. 23:9-14 “Then David and his men, about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah…”1 Sam. 23:15-29 “So Saul returned from pursuing David and went to meet the Philistines…”

Background: Samuel is now at the end of mourning for Saul. God Calls his to another anointing, this time the choice is about the heart. 1 Sam. 16:1-2 “How long will you grieve over Saul…”1 Sam. 16:3-5 “Anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.”1 Sam. 16:6-11 “God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”1 Sam. 16:12-14 “Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul…”1 Sam. 16:15-23 “Provide for me now a man who can play well and bring him to me.”

Background: Saul disobeys God. God told Saul through Samuel to destroy Amalek. He fought the battle but did not listen to the LORD concerning Agag and the plunder. 1 Sam. 15:1-9 “But Saul and the people spared Agag…”1 Sam. 15:10-11 “I regret that I have made Saul king…And Samuel was distressed and cried out to the Lord all night.”1 Sam. 15:12-23 “Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,He has also rejected you from being king.”1 Sam. 15:24-31 “So Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today…”1 Sam. 15:32-35 “Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death; for Samuel grieved over Saul.”

Background: During a Battle with the Philistines Jonathon, Sauls son, rout the enemy. Foolishly King Saul makes an oath for all the soldiers that they should not eat until evening and the enemies are destroyed. Background: Samuel has gotten older and his sons have taken the role of judge and twisted it. Background: After defeating the Israelites, the Philistines take the Ark of the Covenant. They place the Ark in a temple for Dagon. God plagues them with tumors. So the leaders decide to send the Ark back to the Israelites on a cart. Background: Eli had two sons but they forfeited their position by doing immoral things. As a result Eli’s house would be cut short. Samuel was given into Levitical service at a very young age by his mother Hannah and receives a prophetic call that changes the history of Israel forever.
