This sermon is a detailed review of some basic scriptural teachings and misunderstandings of women in leadership. Specifically, it addresses misunderstandings found in I Corinthians 14 and I Timothy 2.

Getting to heaven is not a goal or a project we achieve by working at it until it is completed, and then assured, move on to our next project or goal. Heaven is where our Lord God lives and where we will live with him after our pilgrimage of life to glory is completed. Getting to heaven is about relationship, accepting Christ's death on the cross, his resurrection and ascension. Dying to self and living new life in his forgiving grace, mercy and love.

We read the Bible to find the central plot lines in God's big story. We will find Jesus at the center of that story, and we are called to trust him and his work for us.

In this week's sermon, we continued our conversation on Life's Big Questions. How can we understand and know what God's plan for our life is? We will begin to frame our answer by looking at what God's design for his image bearers have been from the very beginning, including our ideas of holiness, worship, reconciliation and Jesus as the focal point of God's answer to what our plan for life is.

Good Shepherd's Summer Sermon Series focuses on the "Big Questions" the congregation would like to see answered. Politics is on the minds of most of us today because of our national election in November and the nearly constant negative rhetoric that consumes the political news coming into our homes. Some believe Christ came to bring peace and has little to do with politics, Scripture tells a different story. As Christians we need to have a clear understanding of how politics shapes our faith and how it has always shaped Christianity from the first century to the present.

This sermon considered commands to act violently in Deuteronomy, and called us to seek peace with all people now that Jesus has spoken about loving our enemies.

This sermon addresses common questions about how believers hear God speaking through Scripture and life. P James used a couple of personal stories to illustrate both failing and succeeding in obeying God.

This week's sermon continues our journey into our summer series on "Life's Big Questions." Our topic this week focuses our attention on the problem of pain, evil and suffering in the world. Our sermon this morning will begin to address this problem by reflecting on the question: Where is God when suffering occurs?

The story of Cain and Able in Genesis 4 leaves us wondering why God would count one sacrifice good and another not. Turns out God looks at the heart and cares little for sacrifice making faith the reason Abel's sacrifice was honored. Cain's motive grew from a bad attitude and a heart that was full of sin. Cain had already decided against Abel and allowed sin to grow inside of him to the point of murder. In James 1 and 2 we see how sin grows in a heart, how we are tempted when by our own evil desire we are dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown gives birth to death. Death comes when we live for ourselves - rebuking the royal law of God governing all human relationships which is to love our neighbors as ourselves. The unforgivable sin is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, turning away from the cross and giving credit for Christ's miracles to the evil one. Pastor James Wakefield explores the four Scriptural reasons members of the earliest church were allowed to seek a divorce. First century rabbis expanded the rights of slaves to include free women and men (see Exodus 21:7-11). A legal innovation from about 20 BC was rejected because it allowed divorce "for any cause." Jesus' discussion of this "for any cause" divorce has been misread in church history and used to keep people in oppressive marriages.
