First Forty

Today we got home and unpacked our things and we were so tired we went to bed early.

Not getting any work done; Lisa and Rich had an argument, and she feels as though she has nowhere to "be" these days; funny that we need each other more than ever; run into a new ELI student at Kuumbwa; she "auditions" for Bob once the show is over...

Today sucked; couldn't seem to wake up; Case called and said he got a little physical with Maureen; scooter kept stalling and then the fuel lever broke off; push it to Chevron, where some guy hits me up for glucose tablets and gas money; went to bed with a headache.

Grandma, Grandpa, and Jenny pass through L.A. on their way to Hawaii (with Claire); Cherie not home so I have to play host; Grandpa critical of Dad working in Wisconsin; I get all defensive.

My bike came; it's beautiful!; can't ride, though, because it's raining; talked to my parents until late instead of doing math.

Today we drove home and nothing really happened.

Another strange day; I've forgot a lot of Japanese; caring for Justyna's plant; joking around with Bryce in class; Yumi spending the night at Kiyoko's; channel surfing between Skip Gates and "trephination"; guess some people DO need a hole in their head...

Do I like Santa Cruz?; thoughts of grad school at UCLA; speak with Tom a little; he's nice, but a little distant; share my career anxieties with Meggin; she's feeling the same; Claire calls; I all want is to be back in L.A., riding my bike back home from Santa Monica at night.

Tom Fee gets Kevin and Denise to go to a Forum recruitment meeting and I joke with Kevin about all the smiling people. Tom goes through the program and floats around in a born-again, self-righteous high for weeks afterwards.

Grant and I head over from Wag's to 514's pancake breakfast; he goes downtown and meets a girl he knew in elementary school in California; slept most of the day.

We went to see George Washington’s house at Mount Vernon. We also saw Arlington cemetery and Kennedy’s gravesite. We saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Study alone in my office after work; enjoy the peace (and pizza!); stop for a moment outside the Blackburn house to wonder how — aside from Yumi — I ended up here; watch a great program on Ancient Greece; just wanting to "be" for a little while.

Meggin calls for the Big Talk; told her about my fears; she's saying all the right things; Superbowl dreams; Dodo offers to pay my tuition, which I decline; am I stupid?; finish "Bread Givers"

Sean’s dad gets him a job inspecting bricks at some plant in Indiana. The bricks are to be re-used and it’s Sean’s job to give them a visual once-over, checking for cracks. And, a two-hour commute each way just for the privilege!

Visit Sean with Grant; run up to Trak Auto; buy EBTG, The Specials, and Trio at Flipside; Subbuteo soccer; Grant and I talk at Wag's over six hours; run into Mom, Mrs. Wangler, Don Eaton, and Tracy G while there; talk about everything.

We went to see the Museum of Space and saw rockets. We also saw the Wright Brothers plane and the Spirit of Saint Louis.

Meet with Amy about Grad Center web site; great ride to Cabrillo and back; Kris (Akao) also contacted by JET; Muria and Marcel back together again; Shinya upset at this news, threatens to move out.

Mom had called Cherie to find out what's going on; she sounded great but is mad at Grandma; drive to airport in San Jose to cash in my frequent flyer miles; go for jog as great fog rolls in.

Man-who-throws-football asks me if he can continue to stay at the park; Jewish men playing backgammon; homeless woman stakes claim to royalty and pleads with me to call someone in New York for her.

Go for a jog to wake up — windy!; rice tastes of chlorine; brush up on Plato; play guitar; Meggin calls; academic non-mindset; write letters; stay up late making tapes; rain continues.
