Information On Cruising The Great Loop

This week's episode covers Cruising with Kids. Our guests are John and April Scarcella, new members of AGLCA who are about to begin the Great Loop with their three children, ages 12, 10, and 2 1/2. We'll talk about why this is the right time for their family to do the Loop and what they hope the kids will gain from the experience.

We often receive questions from people contemplating doing the Great Loop without a first mate. So this week, we're rebroadcasting a previous episode featuring Tanya Binford, a Gold Looper who single-handed her boat for most of her adventure.

Our guests for this episode are George and Pat Hospodar, authors of "Reflections on America's Great Loop" and "The Great Loop Experience from Concept to Completion".  The Hosposdars start from the Delaware River and Bay and guide us through their home waters of New Jersey.  They share recent and specific information on whether to choose the inside route through New Jersey, or go the outside route which takes you about a mile and a half off shore.  Hear details on what to expect, where to anchor, what marinas to choose, and what to see in this area. Florida Senate Bill 1548 titled “An Act Related to Vessel Safety”, addresses many valid safety issues related to the anchoring of derelict boats.  However, it also contains controversial proposals limiting boaters’ ability to anchor in areas “within 200 feet of developed waterfront property” from one hour past sunset until one hour before sunrise. The Seven Seas Cruising Association leads a team that includes AGLCA, BoatUS and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) in the fight against pending restrictions on the right to anchor in Florida.
