How to Help Fort McMurray Wildfire Victims #FortMacFire
09/05/2016 Duração: 05minCould you imagine being told you have 15 minutes to pack up everything you own, and get out of your house, never to return? This is the exact circumstance that nearly, 100,000 Canadians were dealing with over the past week as wildfires ravaged through Fort McMurray, Alberta. As we wrapped up our Mother's Day celebrations, my wife and I were talking about what we would grab if we were told we had 15 minutes. It takes us more than 15 minutes to just our 2 kids out of the house, let alone gather up our personal belongings. The best we could come up with was my wife taking the kids while I grabbed whatever I could. Fortunately, some of those evacuated did find some humour in their grieving process through a Facebook called "[Controversial Humor] Fort McMurray Everything goes!!!", where evacuees shared some of the funniest things they packed, like Cheese slices and snow pants. What has amazed me the most about this situation, is how Canadians come together to support one another in a time of need. This disaster ha

How to make your passion your career with the right mindset w. @NikkiBGolf
02/05/2016 Duração: 29minOne of the most common questions I get when someone new I meet learns that I played Division I Golf in College is "Why didn't I pursue a career in golf?" A little over 10 years has gone by - and now I finally have the answer! I didn't have the right mindset. Fortunately over the last 10 years, through a lot of trial and error, I have been able to get a better understanding of the basics around what is needed to be successful in every aspect of my life. Today's guest has mastered that at such an early point in her career and is going to set the golf industry on fire! Nikki B is a recent graduate and fellow collegiate golfer. Surprisingly we didn't get into too much golf talk, although I'm sure we could have killed an hour or two doing that - instead, we dove right into why Nikki decided to start her own business pursuing the thing she loves the most - the game of golf! What's most impressive about what she has accomplished is the trail she is blazing for future female golfers with the "Women Who Drive" communi

HOP #37: How to turn your passion into a wildly successful business
25/04/2016 Duração: 44minThis episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast is probably one of the best yet! "If you decide you can, or you decide you can't - you're right!" One of my favourite things about this podcast is having the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, and in today's episode, I have the privilege of interviewing Jennifer Broxterman, who is a Registered Dietitian, entrepreneur, and owner of NutritionRx, as well as a Foods and Nutrition professor at the University of Western Ontario. I had always known Jennifer was going to be successful, but to hear her story in this episode blew me away. Not only has she built a thriving business, she is having fun and is incredibly happy while doing it! One of the things that surprised me the most, was how dedicated Jennifer

HOP #35: How to effectively communicate across generations with Jessica Stollings
14/03/2016 Duração: 42minHave you ever been in a meeting with a boss, or colleague that is much older (or much younger), and you just can't seem to get your point across? No matter which angle you try to take there seems to be this wall that neither side can break through. This is exactly how Jessica Stollings started her career. When she launched her career, she couldn't understand the lack of feedback she was looking for from her boss, and when she did get feedback it made her seem as if she was a complete failure. That led to a unique journey where she would spend an hour a week, which spawned from a Starbucks Gift card from a friend, to do research into the challenges in communication between generations. What amazed me about Jessica's story is how she took a personal struggle and turned it into a business. What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast: -How listening can help bridge the communication gap -The value of committing 1 hour per week to discovering your passion -The importance of being discip

HOP #34: How to overcome rejection with NY Times Best Selling Author, @MichaelPort
29/02/2016 Duração: 01h37sHave you ever had a big idea that you knew would completely change your life, and years went by and you "wish" you followed through on it? You're not alone. I have spent the last 7 years failing, or giving a half-assed effort to pursuing my dreams. It wasn't until I committed to going all in when I launched this podcast did I finally realize the importance of taking action. What held me back? The fear of rejection! I was afraid of what people might think of my idea, my perspective, or not even know what a podcast was. Today's guest mastered the fear of rejection and has made living teaching people the art of performance. Called “an uncommonly honest author" by the Boston Globe, a "marketing guru" by The Wall Street Journal, and a “sales guru” by the Financial Times, Michael Port is a NY Times bestselling author of six books including Book Yourself Solid, The Think Big Manifesto and his hot new release, Steal the Show. Interestingly, he is probably the only NY Times bestselling business book author to have als

02/02/2016 Duração: 17minThese past six months have been a manifestation of what it means to find a passion and take action. I had put off launching this podcast for a little over 8 months for so many b.s. reasons. Literally, I had every bad excuse, but I realized that I wasn’t the only person making excuses and it was time for me to just “burn the boats” and just do it! With a 15-month-old and another one on the way, I jumped in. I knew that if I didn’t start, I would put it off forever and would be kicking myself year after year as the excuses would pile up. Today’s episode is a recap of some of the greatest life lessons I have learned over the last 6 months, plus a few big announcements. 8 Major Life Lessons I learned from Podcast Guests: 1. HOP 28: How childlike curiosity led to a career in startups with Zvi Band (@skeevis)
17/01/2016 Duração: 45minThe Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode 28. How childlike curiosity led to a career in startups with Zvi Band, co-founder of Contactually. When I was young, I would switch career paths based on whatever cool thing I had seen recently. I started out at 3 wanting to be a garbage man, mostly because the trucks were cool. At 5, I wanted to be a pilot after flying to Disney, and at 10, I wanted to be a marine biologist after a trip to an aquarium. Now, at 33, I have finally realized that I love to create, something I shared with this week's guest; Zvi Band, co-founder of Contactually and two DC Meet-ups. Zvi's journey started with a Lego room that he had in his childhood home and his entrepreneurial journey started not too long after. "When I was in high school, I ran Skeevis Windows/Internet Newsletter, a weekly newsletter with Windows tips, tricks, and funny jokes. It grew to over 3,000 subscribers. I loved it." Zvi considers himself a Founder, a Hacker, and a Community Builder. In this episode we talk about

HOP #27: Building Online Communities with @MsInTheBiz Founder, Helenna Santos
12/01/2016 Duração: 28minThis week's guest blew me away! She has shown how building online communities can help so many people. What originally started as a business to help women in show business, actually has a readership of over 54% men. It goes to show the importance of quality content. One of the most important lessons she shares, that really stood out to me, was her focus on committing the first 18 to 24 months of her business to building a brand and a community. That focus has paid dividends as she has grown from a community of 80 to over 200 writers in countries all over the world. What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast: - How to launch and improve as you go - The importance of building online communities - Failure is totally ok! - Learn to be creative, have fun and surround yourself with great people - Financial Advice: "Never Get a Credit Card" To get more information and connect with Helenna Santos, visit www.douglasjfoley.com/27 Photo Credit: Cathy Baron Photography Enjoy!

HOP 25: Mary Fehr shares how she raised $3 M to help Female Entrepreneurs in Ghana
20/12/2015 Duração: 24minHow two friends raised over $3 Million to support female entrepreneurs with Mary Fahr. The timing of this episode could not have been better! With Christmas right around the corner, it was such an honour to share Mary and Sara’s story about how they have now raised over $325,000, for GROW. With funding from the Canadian Government, every dollar they raised has the power of ten. That means $300,000 from their bike ride grows to $3 million for MEDA's GROW project in Ghana. We all want to do good in the world, but for whatever reason we let our everyday life get in the way. Fortunately, these two friends set out to find a way to change poverty, and have directly affected the lives of more than 3,200 families through GROW (Greater Rural Opportunities for Women) project. $3 Million and 3,200 families are numbers that would dumbfound most people. I know when Mary told me during our interview, I had to pick my jaw up off the ground before I could continue. When they first started, they had a goal of $16,000, which i

He worked extremely hard to land his dream job at 23 working at the White House under Bill Clinton as a staff writer. From there he went on to Law School and founded SmartBusinessRevolution.com. HOP #22: How to be authentic and bounce back from a near death experience with April Vokey
30/11/2015 Duração: 58minHow to be authentic and bounce back from a near death experience with April Vokey, founder of Flygal.ca, Podcast Host of Anchored, and TV Host of Shorelines. It was a true honour to have April Vokey on the show this week. Even trying to write this introduction, I struggle to put into words what the conversation was like. This episode was a bit off script from the typical format, and I couldn't be happier. In this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, we talk about what life is really like behind the scenes of an industry icon, and how she got her start as an entrepreneur launching her own fishing guide business in British Columbia, Canada at the age of 24. What amazed me about April's mindset, was how she bounced back from a near-death car accident, sold her personal belongings, and was tying flies while she recovered to get back on the water and resume her growing business. That is what a true entrepreneur would do - hustle your way back to the top. What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness

16/11/2015 Duração: 35minHow to follow your passion and start a new career with Matchmaker and Entrepreneur - Kate Edwards Before I can begin to introduce this week's guest you need to go check out her LinkedIn profile (click here) - you will notice one of the most creative and well-written summary's I have ever seen with a focus on five things: 1. I meet the coolest people 2. I do the coolest things 3. I hear the coolest stories 4. I make people happy 5. I do what I love, not what I’m supposed to How would you like that as your "Job Summary"? That is exactly why I was so excited to share her story on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast. Kate talks about her life in pursuit of the American dream - an ivy league education, Internship at Facebook and MBA from UCLA, multiple VP Roles. It's the type of resume you see in future TECH CEO's, with one big exception. HOP #20: How to build a business by solving a problem with Sam Payrovi, founder Saintly Bags
08/11/2015 Duração: 43minFrom frustration to fruition, Saintly Bags founder, Sam Payrovi shares how to build a business by solving a problem I was introduced to Sam Payrovi, by previous show guest, Maggie Oldham from Episode #12. I am always grateful for introductions, and this week I am exceptionally grateful because the insight Sam shared into how he created an authentically American Made product is incredible. One of the most interesting moments of the show (around the 8-minute mark) came when Sam shared his story about how and why he chooses to manufacture his weekender bags in New York. When he decided to make a customized bag, manufacturers, family and friends all told him that it couldn't be done - well he sure proved them wrong. Not only is he doing it, but received an A+ rating from Men's Journal in the process. Sam also talks about how starting Saintly, has lead to a new endeavor, "Custom Consortium," which is going to be a game changer! He gives away so many gold nuggets for entrepreneurs throughout the show. What you will
