A wise man once said, “I took this job simply because there’s 32 of these in this league. It is a pleasure, it is a privilege, it is an honor to be the head coach of one of these franchises and I happen to have that opportunity to do that now. Again, obviously I’m here simply because this is a bottom-line business and regardless of what had happened in the past, I’ve been put in a situation here to be the head coach of this football team. Our goal, every team’s goal in this league is to win a Super Bowl. Every year. Every team thinks that that can happen every year, regardless of what happened the year before, it’s always the goal. That’s always the goal that we’ll have when everybody walks through that door, everybody in the building. Everybody here, that’s our one goal. When the season is over, you start over. The last time I saw the Houston Texans play LIVE football, I was a freshman in college, and my good friend Taylor’s Uncle, took him, another friend, and I, to watch them play the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009. We drank three underage Miller Lites and ate a hamburger before the game. His uncle left at halftime because said beers and hamburger made him sleepy. Maurice Jones-Drew scored a touchdown down at our endzone and Texans fans ran to the wall to give him the middle finger. Houston signed Chris Brown that summer to be their redzone back, only for him to fumble into the endzone when attempting to score the game tying touchdown. The Jags recovered. The Texans lost. That’s how things were from 2008-2010. This time we went again with his Uncle, and his niece, and my wife and four month son. This Texans team is entirely different. They signed a horde of veterans to try and win games this year, but replicated last season’s four win total. Houston had a positive point differential, they were blown out of multiple

In a lost season, where all hope sunk to the bottom of the sea last March, the Houston Texans needed, and searched desperately for some of it. Davis Mills has turned from unplayable to playable, hitting his floor of backup quarterback a season or two early, giving desire and hope that he may become a competent starting quarterback one day. Jonathan Greenard has turned into someone who should be the third best player on a good front seven. Tavierre Thomas and Jonathan Owens maybe eventual consistent starters on a NFL roster. Beating a hopeful playoff Chargers team with the backups, and the backups to the backups, behind the arm of ludicrous Davis Mills, was all everyone needed, after Jacksonville week one being so far away. 2-11 versus 2-11. A game for the ages. The winner gets to call itself the third worst team in the league. The loser moves up to first overall pick territory. Two of the dumbest franchises were set to play an incredibly stupid game. We were given it all. Kickoff returned for touchdowns, a punt penalty that set up an opening drive touchdown, failed screen passes, sopping wet field goals, David Culley sporting polarized sunglasses, Corgi halftime races, and Brandin Cooks clinching it with a tunnel screen touchdown. The abyss, the bottom, the void, these terms are rocks that make up the Texans lexicon, for those of us who write, talk, watch, and love this football team. We get asked all the team, is this as bad as it can get, have we found the bottom, was this the worst game in a newest slew of terrible games, and I can ensure, we have not. Things can get better, but they also can always get worse, and for the Houston Texans they usually do. In a strange way, losing 19-7 after forcing five turnovers is a step in the right direction. It was fun. There were interesting things that happen. Houston playing Miami is a bridge to interesting and deeper conversations, where we reside, down in the depths, at the end of the pool, hoping we can reemerge to a reality that we used to have, when the football team was good while we loved the football team. Beans are one of my favorite foods. I get a pound of black beans, lime juice, jalepeno, and onion, toss it in the Instapot, then wait a hour. This past offseason the Houston Texans spent their time signing a horde of veteran players to churn the bottom of the roster, change the culture of the team, and maybe, flip them for future draft selections, or help them acquire future compensatory picks. There were two problems. The players they signed weren’t very good, and teams don’t give up assets for players who aren’t very good. Before the buzzer hit, Houston was able to trade Mark Ingram for a 2024 seventh round pick, and Charles Omenihu for a 2023 sixth round pick. Nick Caserio’s plan failed. It didn’t work. Everything is the same. The Texans have talent problems on defense, so they play players out of position, and they change from cover two to cover three, then back to cover two, and then back to cover three, and none of it matters. They can’t tackle. They take terrible pursuit angles. The middle of the field is open. They force two stops during the Rams 38 point trek, both of which occurred because of drops from the Rams receivers. The offense keeps Davis Mills in utero, this, combined with the worst run offense in the NFL, leads to three first downs and five three out and outs until garbage time.
