The Houston Texans are 1-6. The things that we saw as issues this past offseason are issues today. Not having a backup plan for Tyrod Taylor, restructuring contracts, drafting a quarterback with their first draft selection in the third round, the decision to move Tytus Howard to guard, Lovie Smith’s Jurassic cover two scheme, the cornerback play, and the horde of veterans who made their way to Houston. Blood lust wasn’t satiated from previous wrongs. The Cardinals won, but it wasn’t by enough. The performance was similar to the week before, except the pass rush was better. The rest? It was about the same. It’s time for something different. Instead of harp on the offensive line struggles, the holes in the zone, and the treehouse Tim Kelly is hiding Davis Mills in, it’s time to stretch our vantage point to the heavens, and take a look at the entirety of the Houston Texans. Phrases like ‘in talks’, ‘have had conversations’, and ‘are listening’ have been used, but this week that changed. I’m old, I’m tired, and I’m stupid, and of the three, and most of all, I'm stupid. Yes, I know the Texans lost 31-3 to the Indianapolis Colts, but throughout this episode I said the Colts scored 34 points. After all these years, and all these games, somethings get lost in the wind. You know, like how many games Houston lost in Indianapolis before Bill O’Brien broke the curse, or how many receptions T.Y. Hilton has against them over the years, or which year Mike Vanderjagt nailed a game winning kick with zero seconds left. Mac Jones threw an interception that was too far inside to Lonnie Johnson Jr. Everything changed after one terrible decision. Rather than punt the ball, they faked the fake punt, and Cameron Johnston rocked one off his own teammate. New England was given easy field position. They scored. Then they continued to score until a late field goal finally gave them a lead. Johnston’s foot didn’t meet the ball, it met a sarcophagus, that cracked open and unleashed a green garish curse onto the Texans football team. I know how it’s going to go. After all offseason of clamoring for Nick Caserio, the veterans he signed, his draft class, and the trades he made, it will disappear. Love and savor Josh Allen. Let his loving grace into your heart. It’s never too late to atone. If you didn’t realize he was the one true quarterback after leapt over Anthony Barr, or when he stiff armed J.J. Watt in the pocket, or caught a touchdown pass against Houston in a playoff game, or found his deep ball and turned into a top five MVP caliber quarterback, then maybe you realized it today, when he led a Bills team that skunked Houston 40-0. It was the worst loss in Texans franchise history. It was the third worst start by a starting quarterback in Texans franchise history. Without a running game, in the rain, with only Brandin Cooks to throw to, Davis Mills was left to die in the plains, squashed by stampeding Buffaloes, or Bills, I don’t know, the name doesn’t make any sense. The NFL landscape will be spending their time talking, talking, talking about Brady and Bill. Tom left New England for Tampa Bay after a messy divorce, and various teams turning down his services. In Tygod we trust. In Davis Mills we drown in sorrow. Houston was electric in the first half. Tyrod Taylor had one incompletion, ran and passed for a touchdown, executed Tim Kelly’s offense perfectly, and had a QBR of 94.8. Justin Reid forced two turnovers all on his own. Houston went into the half tied 14-14. Then disaster struck. Taylor suffered a hamstring injury, and in came Davis Mills. He was sacked once, fumbled once, threw one interception, managed one touchdown drive aided by a 27 yard pass interference penalty, and he had a QBR of 10. The accuracy was spottier than a through hiker’s underwear. The arm strength was fuzzy. His pocket presence was non existent. Pray for Mills. He needs it. Shades of New England 2017 turned putrescent and green. Houston went from the feel good hit of September, to bad, but not only that, they were bad and boring.
