Friday of 22nd Week In Ordinary Time. Some might say Catholics are supposed to be somber or "serious." The Jewish leaders of Jesus' time wondered why his disciples didn't fast as much as other religious people. Our Lord's response to them are good words for us: we are a party people! Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary's Assumption gives us hope that death will one day finally be conqured and our eternal souls will be reunited with our bodies. Thursday of the 17th Week Ordinary TIme. In the Old Testament "The Ark of the Covenant" is the dwelling place of God. Jesus promised that the Holy Spriit lives in each of us. Solemnity of St. John the Baptist. John was God's "secret weapon" to prepare people for the coming of the Lord. Similarly, we should pave the way for those we know and meet to receive the Lord. Jesus uses the example of sinful woman washing his feet to demonstrate the concept that those who experience forgiveness of a larger sin are in turn able to love more deeply. Third Sunday of Easter (C). Rachel Joy Scott, the first high school student to be killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, issued a challenge to her classmates about living with trust and compassion. We are issued this same challenge by Jesus to live as an Easter people, even in the midst of tragedy in the world that surrounds us.
