We coached each other through auditions, ran lines with each other, and enjoyed many curtain calls together--- side by side. However, as much as we loved performing together, we eventually became burnt out and jumped into a new production: Partners in PARENTING. Parenting allowed us to fall in love all over again in a different partnership capacity. We enjoyed watching each other transition into caretakers, nurturers, providers and leaders. Whether growing or grappling, we found passion and progress in this new field of parenting. However, we seemed to lose our dating groove soon after delivering our first bundle of joy... This week, just after a successful opening of Jesus Christ Superstar,the cast was informed of an unexpected circumstance that would result in a complete overhaul of our already fully rehearsed stage production. Suddenly our sold out performances were postponed and we were back in rehearsals unfuuing the snafu. I was reminded this week that not only is live theatre unpredictable, it’s a metaphor for...well, EVERYTHING. Theatre, like life is UNPREDICTABLE. (Perhaps that is why immensely dramatic people tend to gravitate to the stage!) In all my years on the stage, I can't recall a single stage production that didn't bring about a sticky situation. No matter the predicament, I have never encountered a challenge big enough to cancel the entire run of a show. Somehow, the show always finds a way to live. Confessions of a Rock Opera Nut This past weekend my husband and I opened our local repertory theatre’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar, an absolute dream come true for both of us. When we first got the call that BOTH of us had been cast-- (leaving our childcare situation in a bit of a pickle)--- we decided that it would be better to beg for forgiveness rather than to ask for permission to bring the kids with us to every rehearsal. What we feared might be disastrous and chaotic ended up being a delightful and enlightening experience for everyone. The path of least resistance certainly has it's perks... ..but the road less traveled has adventure and character. Ever since SoCal weather began hitting triple digits, I shifted my morning workout routine into swimming laps. To keep my hands from cramping, I use resistance gloves --- which have been largely beneficial in building more muscle tone in my arms, as well as helping me to move faster through the water with the pull of the resistance.
