In these two stories we see that Jesus came to not only erase the line between clean and unclean food, he also removed the barricade between clean and unclean people. Christianity is a heart religion and a religion of grace. The religion of the Scribes and Pharisees was a religion of outward ritual and personal merit.

Do our traditions cause us to miss the point or highlight it? The point being twofold. First, that we have a heart problem that requires a heart solution. And, secondly, we should avoid any traditional practices that put a stumbling block before others to prevent them from participating in the church life and from hearing and believing the gospel.

Jesus was confronted with the soul-destroying effects of religious hypocrisy driven by adherence to human tradition over God's Word. Does truth foster in you a heart relationship with God or does tradition breed external religion in your life? Unbelief takes offense at the seeming ordinariness and familiarity of Jesus. Unbelief doesn't look for reasons to believe, but is comfortable in its own hardened prejudice. But prejudice against Jesus, is like shooting oneself in the foot; for if one rejects Jesus where else does one turn?
