On Palm Sunday 2,000 years ago Jesus entered Jerusalem as a king. He entered unlike any other king before or since. Jesus behavior was completely unexpected and to this day people are still trying to figure out this unexpected King.

When you cook, it’s not enough just to have all the ingredients. It’s not enough to have the right pots and pans and spatulas. You need to put the ingredients together in the right way at the right time. You need a recipe! Reading the bible is no different. If we’re going to understand it and really live it out, which is the real goal, we have to follow the “recipe”.

It’s the new year and most of us are making resolutions and thinking about what we want to change in 2019. Many of us are thinking about how we need to eat better and get healthy. Lots of us need to change our diet. How about spiritually? How’s your spiritual diet? What is it you’re feeding on when it comes to your relationship with God and what changes to your diet do you need to make in 2019?

"Never give up. Never surrender." That's the American way. We're told all the time not to quit and not to give in. We're told that winners never quit and so often this time of year we try to double down on our efforts and resolve to work harder in the new year so that we can finally succeed. But what if the thing we really need to do is quit? What if we need to surrender? Maybe this year God is calling you to do something different. Maybe in 2019 you just need to give up!

There’s a lot of pressure to perform at the holidays. The family is in town. Presents you get are compared to presents others get. There’s a lot of events you’re “required” to attend. Sometimes, for Christians, we can also feel pressured to perform for God. To put on a great face and be more spiritual…especially this time of year. Jesus came to set us free from this type of pressure which is something we need to remember even more at Christmas!

It's amazing the lengths we will go to for the people we love. We will write poetry, spend tons of money, drive hundreds of miles, do and say all sorts of things. It's pretty impressive! Nothing, however, is quite as impressive as what God was willing to do, just because of love. As we ponder the miracle of the Incarnation, God made man, keep in mind that He did it all because of His love for us!

Not everyone likes the light. When I wake my kids up in the morning, I often turn the light on and they start to whine incessantly until I turn it off. This can happen spiritually too. Even though people need the Light, sometimes they reject it and avoid it. It was true on the first Christmas and it’s still true today. The cool part is that Jesus was willing to endure all of this so that we could walk in the light, as He is in the light!

Have you ever been someplace truly dark? Not just mostly dark but the “can’t see your hand in front of your face” type dark? All of us, spiritually speaking were once in this type of darkness. Some of us may not remember but it’s true. We were in total darkness until a light came to rescue us. That light’s name is Jesus! As we begin the Christmas season, we are going to dig in and learn about the arrival of this Light into the darkness of humanity.
