There are certain things about our church and our culture…certain things about this environment that drew you here. There is something in the DNA of this faith family that is worth protecting. The danger when we grow so rapidly is…we could lose our identity…we could forget what makes us who we are. It’s important for us to pause and focus on the key ingredients of what makes us who we are. If we forget where we’ve come from…we are in danger of losing our bearings. Today we will pause for a moment and reflect…remember…why we worship the way we worship. Northplace Church is a Spirit-Empowered Church. We believe the Holy Spirit is the active agent of God on planet earth. We believe the Holy Spirit fills and empowers God’s people to expand his kingdom in our world. We believe that the book of Acts is more than a history book. At first glance, you might be asking, “Pastor, what are you going to preach out of these last three verses…it’s simply Paul signing off…it’s the formal closing of a personal letter.” You’re exactly right, and it’s in this formal closing that the Apostle has tucked a tremendous amount of revelation. In this list of Paul’s coworkers, we have briefly talked about Ephapras, we know Mark who wrote the gospel of Mark, we mentioned Aristarchus and we know Dr. Luke, who wrote the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts…but what about Demas. Here, it’s obvious that Demas is a fellow minister of the gospel and ministry partner of the apostle Paul. Each week, we have forced ourselves to answer the question…How would our lives change if we started living like we were leaving? How would our lives be different if we knew we only had a few days left to live? Since Easter weekend we have been more intentional in trying to calibrate our lives around eternity. We’ve been trying to live with the full understanding that this life is brief but eternity lasts forever. We’ve been trying to live as if we were leaving. This is the very reason why Jesus’ life was so revolutionary. He didn’t come to stay he came to leave. He didn’t waste a day, a moment, a conversation…because he knew how short his life would be. As we have said, He lived passionately. He loved completely and He left boldly. We have discussed living passionately and last week discussed leaving boldly. Today, I want to look at what it means to love completely. A gift must be given freely and with goodwill; if it is forced, it is no gift at all.In verse 9, Paul describes himself. The NIV translates the greek phrase as—as Paul an old man, and a prisoner of Christ. A good number of scholars wish to substitute another translation for old man. It is argued that Paul could not really be described as an old man. He certainly was not sixty years old; he was somewhere between that and fifty-five. But, on this basis, those who object to the translation old man are wrong. The word which Paul uses of himself is presbutēs; and Hippocrates, the great Greek medical writer, says that a man is presbutēs from the age of forty-nine to the age of fifty-six. Everything has been set up to feel like an airport terminal…to help you understand that this earthly life is temporary…transitory…We are trying to make you aware that you are about to board a flight. In a way, life is like an airport terminal. Based on the decisions you make here, you decide what gate your going to depart from…you decide what journey your going to take in the after you die. In these moments together we are trying to address the reality that nobody wants to talk about. We are all “terminal”. No matter how you slice it, this life is going to end…for all us…every…last…one…of…us. As we said last week… The most significant marking any tombstone is not the dates but the dash. For the first time and a long time we actually started thinking about how short this life really is compared to the “forever” of eternity. We have intentionally played off of the double meaning of the word “terminal”. Everything has been set up to feel like an airport terminal…to make you aware that you are about to board a flight. You probably know that the tone of Palm Sunday is celebratory. This is what is now the first day of Passion Week. This is the day the crowds are surrounding Jesus as he rides in to town on the back of a donkey. They are worshipping him singing and lifting their voices declaring “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” But in a few short days, this same crowd that is praising Jesus because they believe him to be their long awaited messiah…will cry “crucify him”. In such a short time, how do people go from praise on Palm Sunday to “crucify him” on Good Friday?The answer to that question is simply… Palm Sunday is day of unmet expectations. Believe it or not we are two weeks away from Easter. The staff here at Northplace has been working tirelessly for the last couple months getting ready for this Easter season. First, because it’s the first Easter we will ever celebrate together in this new facility. Second, and most important, the Easter season is the most opportune time in the entire calendar year for people to come into relationship with Jesus Christ. More people will return to a church or visit a church for the first time on Easter weekend than any weekend this year. We are culturally predisposed this time of year to be more spiritually aware. People who would never accept an invitation to church are most likely to come on Easter. People who would never normally have a meaningful religious conversation are more likely to engage in that kind of dialogue this time of year. I want to make a statement that may strike you as awkward. Love is a Promise that Endures….To understand this kind of love, we must look to its source – God. He didn’t wait until we cleaned up to offer us salvation. “While we were yet sinners,” (Romans 5:8) God demonstrated His love for us through Calvary.
