Christ-followers have always understood that the way of Jesus is often “upside down” from the way we generally believe life “works”… the economics of the Kingdom are no exception

How I use what I possess is the most reliable reflection of what I most treasure and trust.

Humankind was designed from the beginning to participate in and manage the flourishing of the grand creation project, a role that would naturally lead to life pervaded with joy. But the stories that drive our understanding of money, stuff and consumption often sabotage our ability to experience the life our soul naturally craves

Resurrection reminds us that the Kingdom of God is both already here and not yet and we are called to participate in the coming of His Kingdom in the here and now as it unfolds. As we do, how we choose to entrust and engage our resources has significant implications for the kind of new life we’ll discover along the way.

Pastor Dave walks us through the story of Mary Magdalene to bring together the essence of our Lent Series, “Hallowed Darkness” and the implications of the resurrection of Jesus as the means of experiencing the reality of how life is born from the death and darkness we experience in the dark night of the soul.

The Scriptures tell story after story of the faithful who experienced some form of a “walk in the darkness” From Abram & Sarah, Moses, Joseph, Job and the prophets to Jesus, Peter, Paul and so many more. Nobody wishes for loss, pain, sorrow, anxiety… what we sometimes refer to as a “dark night of the soul”; but those days come none-the-less. But the real question isn’t about why it comes but “What will I do when it does?”

For us, as for Jesus, the “darkness” of the wilderness can be a means of transformation that allows us to encounter and experience a whole new dimension the love and power of God in us and through us

How does our relationship to physical darkness inform us about the relationship we may have with the inner kind - the kind that disrupts restfulness, keeping us awake at night (Jesus resting in the storm). As we explore the Dark Seas together, may we grow in the confidence to really trust that all of Creation is subject to God’s power of restoration, God’s dominion—from sea turtles, to sea monsters— we can rest in the mystery of darkness, because God is with us.

When we choose to artificially light the night, what is it that we’re ultimately relying on? When we choose a ‘full solar spirituality’, where does our reliance come from? From the physical world of light and darkness, to our metaphorical and spiritual worlds of light and darkness, what sustains us, what do we rely on?

Perhaps for numerous reasons, most of us tend to have primarily negative associations with “darkness”. Whether real or metaphorical, it is not a space we move into willingly with anticipation. But what if there are truths we can only learn or experience in the dark? What if there is good in it after all?

Pastor Dave and Pastor Lindsey walk us through a conversation about Lent, reminding us of its significance and refreshing the lens of how we generally have understood “darkness”

Pastor Lindsey reminds us of the sacred mystery of God’s life-giving nature and power known by the Hebrew people as God’s “ruach”

Pastor Dave concludes the series by painting a picture of the Way of the Kingdom and placing the steps in their proper context as practices essential to transformation and the coming of the Kingdom on earth

Finding ultimate freedom only comes through the experience of what those in recovery refer to as “a spiritual awakening” and understanding that there’s a necessary cycle involved in the process and path that leads us there

Step 11 is the reminder that the life your soul craves and was designed for can only flourish through “conscious contact” with its Creator

As we near the end of the series, Step 10 reminds us that the journey of the recovery of our “new humanity” as Paul calls it requires an ongoing commitment to the principles and practices we’ve learned and begun to work through in Steps 1-9

As we continue in the series, discovering how to recover the freedom of becoming fully human in Christ, we recognize that in order to “be at peace with one another” as Paul stated, we needs to make amends “if at all possible” with all our neighbors; to pursue the flourishing of all humankind. / Interview with Anya Covington
