Having come to the place of being completely open and ready for God to remove our character defects, how we ask makes all the difference

It can be hard to do the work in the shadows… to acknowledge we have some character defects, and to confess them. What is often harder - but critical - is to be “entirely ready” to have God remove and replace them… all of them

Step Five is about gaining the confidence in the reality of God’s abundant love and grace, so that we can courageously confess and admit the exact nature of our wrongs. As a result, we will experience the freedom that lies within the Kingdom of God that leads to healing, wholeness and flourishing. Step Five: “We admitted to God, ourselves and another human the exact nature of our wrongs.”

In step 4 of the 12 steps, we discover what may be the most difficult step of the journey into wholeness and freedom… the one step that we’re probably most likely to avoid. And yet, we may well be surprised at how wrong we were about it, if we’re willing to do it anyway.

Everybody wants a better life. We all long to be free…in our bones. But becoming free requires more than a vision of what that looks like and the desire to get there. It requires a decision. A decision that sets the journey in motion.

The journey to freedom, as Jesus offered and intended for us, is always one step at a time and understanding the relationship between recovering our sanity and restoring our soul is profoundly critical

Everybody has some dimension of their life that weighs them down… that seems to come in cycles bringing loss or pain, fear, shame, a “death” in one form or another. Finding freedom isn’t about “trying harder”. It’s about understanding how transformation happens and beginning that journey.

The claim of Jesus and the affirmation of Paul is that Jesus came to set humankind free. Can you imagine a life free from fear, worry, doubt, defensiveness, want and resentment (among other things)? How do we begin to experience that life?
