Adoption humour with Joanne
24/03/2020 Duração: 01h10minIn this episode Des open with another Trump rant but he controls himself because he doesn't want to hog the episode. Joanne and Des then chat a bit about whether they wish they were married through all this. (Not to each other) They then decide and try to workshop some ideas around a new show Joanne might write now that she has so much time. She is thinking about doing a show about being adopted and it leads to a really interesting discussion about being adopted and nature vs nurture. Its a really fun ep and a good distraction from all the madness. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A chat about life, death and booze with Brian O'Connell
05/03/2020 Duração: 01h09minOn today's episode I sat down with my good friend Brian O'Connell. You may know him as a regular contributor to RTE Radio one and also as the author of "Wasted" and more recently "The personals." We chatted in Cork literally steps from UCC where we were classmates together in the 90s. We had a very deep conversation that began with chatting about how he found the personal ads in newspapers as a doorway into people's lives. It was also a doorway into a very personal discussion for us about mortality as he had just come from recording in Marymount Hospice. He then opened up about his own grief and guilt around his friend's suicide. We finished the discussion chatting about our lives without booze and checking in on all that so many years since we both decided to stop. I always have great conversations with Brian and I am delighted to be able to share one with you guys. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Is Bernie going to end up like Jeremy Corbyn?
27/02/2020 Duração: 01h03minThis week we have Aidan Bishop and Stephen Mullan on the pod having the craic. The title of this ep is deliberately provocative. In actual fact we have a broad discussion about the Democratic primaries and the establishment of Bernie Sanders as the clear front runner. Before all that we mess around a bit about the corona virus or Covid19 and ask if it is actually as serious a thing as the media makes out. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We finish up the chat talking about how much marketing affects our perception on what gender should do what thing. However this is a topic that we plan to return to in greater detail later on. Are you Masculine? How to answer that question with Stephen Mullan
07/02/2020 Duração: 01h09minIn this weeks episode I chat with Stephen Mullan about masculinity. He had told me to listen to a Guardian youtube series about Masculinity which I am half way through. Before we chatted about what came up in the early episodes of that series, we chatted about his experiences on a day out with the Dublin boys club. Its an idea about trying to create a healthy space for men to talk about what is going on for them and bond with men in a healthy way. We also chat about the importance of male friendships and the difficulty of opening up and getting closer to new friends. Finally we get into modern masculinity, the term toxic masculinity and how to be able to chat about the struggles men face without shame and judgement, particularly around how men themselves are victims of what people term toxic masculinity. Emman Idama: Nigeria to Ireland and then to hell and back
06/12/2019 Duração: 01h46minI chatted with Comedian Emman Idama at my house recently. He is originally from Nigeria and came to Ireland when he was 7. I had intended to focus on Emman being from that first generation of immigrants that came to Ireland in the 1990's however the chat took a massive turn when Emman opened up about the abuse he endured in his household and how living with his mentally ill mother was a challenge. I am not quite sure how he survived that challenge to be honest with you and I am still a bit shell shocked from hearing about it. It really is an incredible tale of survival but also a sad tale about the toll mental illness takes on a family. A must listen! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
