How to Graciously Admit You Don't Know and Keep Your Credibility
07/11/2022 Duração: 15minAs a woman leader you are constantly being sent the message to be more assertive and confident. Confidence and assertiveness do have their place and most times I would encourage women leaders to embrace confidence and feel free to be assertive. However, never is this at the expense of honestly admitting when you don’t know. If you don’t know the answer to a direct question, ‘I don’t know’ is the beginning of a good conversation. But, balancing your confidence as a leader and owning up to a lack of knowledge or competence in a certain area can be tricky. This episode covers how to graciously admit when you don’t know and handle the situation in a way that engenders more confidence in you as a leader. How to Make Staying Organized Easy to Do
26/09/2022 Duração: 17minThere’s a French cooking term mise en place that means to set in place. It is a method of preparation taught all over the world that maximizes efficiency and reduces errors. There are 5 steps to mise en place: Know your recipe — necessary ingredients, cookware, and baking times Prepare your ingredients — clean, chop, mince… whatever is required Arrange your ingredients — appropriate size bowls, positioned logically Prepare your workstation — set the oven temperature, clean the utensils Arrange your tools — similar logic applied to cookware and necessary equipment This level of organization in advance, not only increases the chances of an optimal outcome for the recipe, it provides an easier and even enjoyable experience for the cook. There’s no scrambling around looking for that tool or ingredient. There’s no disappointment after serving the dish realizing an ingredient has been missed or measured incorrectly. [Coaching] Do You Need to Name the Priority?
29/08/2022 Duração: 57minAre you pulled in so many directions you’re busy all day, but when the day ends you don’t feel like you accomplished much of anything? Just like you, the women I coach are in demand. They have teams that want their attention, clients to serve, and tasks that need to get done. I’ve been there myself on many occasions. There are different responses to this state of affairs. You might be in the camp of looking out at some point in the future. You convince yourself that once you get there, it will be a lot better. I did that for years and guess what? As that point in time got closer my calendar filled up and I had all new projects on my plate. This cycle perpetuated for a long time before I realized what I was doing. You might be researching to find new strategies for time management and productivity and making a few strides but still needing some relief. Or, you might have started to give up hope that it will get any better. Regardless of what camp you are in, you’re going to get a lot out of this on-air coachin

[Coaching] Are They Really Judging You?
08/08/2022 Duração: 38minCould anyone possibly meet the expectations you have for yourself? Many of the women I coach have such high expectations for themselves, they sacrifice health and happiness to meet them. Sometimes the driver is the thought that others are expecting a lot from you. But if you looked closely, is that true? Are others watching you and expecting you to overdeliver all the time? Or are you assigning them those judgments because in reality you’re judging yourself. I had a fantastic conversation with Andrea about trying to meet your own unrealistic expectations, delegating, having healthy boundaries, and asking for help. If you feel like you’re doing too much for everyone else, and not getting enough time for you, or for the people and things that are also important to you, listen in. Facing Conflict Head On
01/08/2022 Duração: 21minHow would you describe your comfort level when it comes to confronting conflict? Do you look at it as an opportunity for growth and relationship building? Do you avoid it in the hopes that it will resolve on its own? Or do you find yourself somewhere in the middle? Perhaps at first observing and assessing the situation. But if it’s clear it’s not going away immediately you take steps to nip it in the bud. Some leaders choose to ignore conflict in the workplace in an attempt to “keep the peace.” Yet that can add fuel to the fire. By looking the other way, leaders create an atmosphere of non-trust. Addressing conflict early on is an important first step. A study by the American Management Association (AMA) found that managers spend 24% of their time resolving conflict. Instead of just “resolving” workplace conflict, transform it to cultivate a cutting-edge team that can effectively solve problems and develop creative new ideas. This episode covers facing conflict: how to address and mitigate it, and when to loo

[Coaching] Constructively Dealing with Unconscious Bias
18/07/2022 Duração: 43minWe all have unconscious biases. Men and women, young and old, people from every ethnic background and every socioeconomic class. While you may be able to catch one of your own implicit biases in a flash of awareness, it’s more likely someone else will point your biases out for you. Becoming aware of and removing your unconscious biases takes an openness to hear someone out. It takes reflecting on what they share with you, and considering behaving differently going forward. For many of us, critical feedback causes our defenses to go up. That's a natural human tendency. Because of this, it takes courage to point an unconscious bias out to another person. How the feedback is delivered matters if you want the other person to take in the feedback you are sharing with them. As a leader, you want to keep this in mind as you are preparing to talk to another person about an unconscious bias you've observed them display. This is what came up in a coaching session I had recently with, Jaime, a member of this community a

How to Hold Others Accountable to Lead Effectively
11/07/2022 Duração: 16minDo you dread one-to-one meetings because you’ll be asking the other person to account for an outcome or their performance? Many leaders want to have high performing teams but overlook the fact that accountability is at the heart these teams. If you want your team to deliver on expectations or communicate when they can’t, you have to be able to hold others accountable. You, Seeing from Multiple Perspectives
04/07/2022 Duração: 20minHave you experienced the eye-opening magic of seeing from more than one perspective? When we are children, we believe we are the center of the universe. At that stage in life, we have a difficult time considering why someone would see things differently than we do. If fact, if someone didn’t agree with us, we made up a story about why this person could possibly not agree with our outlook. It takes work to shake out of this default way of thinking and start making a habit of considering how other people are seeing things. However, the reward of staying open-minded and seeing things from multiple perspectives is new ideas, new opportunities and new solutions that you may have missed if you only look at things from your own vantage point. Now take this ability as an individual and add to it a diverse team of people who all see the world differently. If this team can respect and appreciate each other for the unique perspectives and experiences they all bring to the table, this is your dream team. In this episode

[Coaching] You Are the Leader to Develop Other Leaders
27/06/2022 Duração: 50minThe work I do with my clients often centers around adapting to a new role or promotion. It sounds easy, and many of my clients beat themselves up because they assumed it should be an easier transition than it actually is. Taking on a promotion typically looks like being further away from the hands-on work that is being done. Trying to stay close to the work, while coming from a good place of wanting to make sure the work his high quality, can overwhelm your to-do list and train some bad habits in your team. Each new role you take on requires you to shift the way you think of yourself and how you think you provide the highest value. This was something a woman in our community, T, realized while we were recording this on-air coaching session. Take a listen to this episode and let me know if any of this resonated with you. I'm offering T some tips and new perspectives, along with a book recommendation that may be helpful to you as well so stay ‘til the end. Resources Episode Show Notes: Transcript and links ment

Leadership Development for Women Needs to Change
13/06/2022 Duração: 15minHave you ever left a leadership development training feeling like it barely scratched the surface of what you needed? Or, that too much time was spent on competencies you’ve never had an issue with? You might have even had your concerns as a leader brushed aside or dismissed with comments such as, delegate that to your team, speak up more in meetings, brag more, or communicate clearly but don’t be too direct. All this without any guidance on how to navigate the bias, the double-standards, and the identity issues that emerge when we are asked to change our patterns of thought and behavior. The root of the problem is most leadership development training was not designed for women and fails to take women’s specific brain functions, societal conditioning or obstacles into consideration. In this episode we’re covering why leadership development for women is so important and why it needs to change. Resources Episode Show Notes: Transcript and links mentioned in this episode.
