Sinopse
So What Do You Really Do? A podcast hosted by Deadair Dennis Maler talking with comedians, artists, and entertainers about their day jobs. Deadair Dennis is a comedian, a radio vet, and entertainer who has held many terrible day jobs while trying to achieve his goal of paying his rent from performing. Over the years he has worked in construction, restaurants, sales, radio, and soul-sucking, florescent lit offices. Luckily over the years he has met a staggering amount of other artists who have amazing interesting careers while still working at night to make it as an actor, comedian, musician, artists, etc. Sit down with him as chats with some of these amazingly talented artists.

War on Women
15/08/2016 Duração: 46minMy guest on the podcast are the amazingly talented musicians Nancy Hornburg and Sue Werner of the band War on Woman. Nancy is actually a very old friend of mine from my earlier days in music and radio. Sue is the bass player in the band, and basically lives the life that is the epitome of this podcast. By day she’s a data analyst for John Hopkins Hospital and by night plays bass in a feminist hardcore band and a Gin Blossoms cover band (yes, those two things are the exact opposite of each other, and I love it). Stick around because after the podcast is the band’s song “Say It”. Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester & The Dirty Dottys.

Mover & Drummer Chris Eller
24/07/2016 Duração: 02h11minContinuing with music month all July is my good friend and drummer Chris Eller. Chris was in Boston on tour as the drummer for CJ Ramone, which he explains the unusual method he used to get into the band, we talk about old hot spots we used to play at in Baltimore, his job working for a moving company, and life as a musician on tour. If you enjoyed this episode go see Chris when his other band The Huntington’s come to New England on tour Sept. 17th at Koto in Salem and Sept. 18th at Firehouse 13 in Providence, RI. I’m going to be at the show in Salem, hopefully I’ll see some podcast listeners there. Thanks for listening, subscribing, and leaving a review of the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play. The Dirty Dottys
17/07/2016 Duração: 01h36minThis episode of the podcast I got to get out of the studio and onto a boat with The Dirty Dottys. A Boston based Jazz, ska, swing, rock, pop, band. The group is comprised of four music teachers, a scientist, and a musical therapist. This was a fun podcast listening to how each of them are different types of music teachers, finding out what music therapy is, how it helps different types of injuries and rehabilitation, and of course hearing about the SCIENCE stuff that Austin does every day at work. After the podcast is a track from their first self-titled CD, Plight of a First World 20-Something, which is available now on iTunes, Bandcamp, and everywhere else you would buy music. Throughout the summer they are doing these Boston Harbor music cruises every Thursday, so if you’re in the New England area checkout one of the cruises. It’s a fun early evening show with free beer! After months of attempting to schedule a sit down together, I’m glad we finally were able to get together and learn more about what it is

Swapcast With Sketch Performer Steven Richard K
13/07/2016 Duração: 02h15minThis is a special bonus swapcast episode with fellow podcaster Steven Richard K from Search for a Cohost podcast and sketch group Mister Bismuth. We don’t actually get into Steven’s day job because he keeps that separate from his comedy life, which is foreign and weird to me. We talk about that, when and how he got into sketch comedy and how he met up with the fellow Mister Bismuth sketch group. Which, by the way, is one of the best sketch comedy groups in all of Boston if you ask me. They’re weird, absurd, dark, and totally hilarious. Check them out sometime if you can. We also did an episode of his podcast in this. So, you get double the podcasts!!! If you want, you can go listen to his mini-episode (mini compared to my absurdly long podcasts) then come back here and listen for the differences in editing. Which is basically no editing. Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester.

Radio Personality & Father Jackson Blue
10/07/2016 Duração: 02h34minEnding radio month on the podcast is my good friend Jackson Blue. Jackson and I used to work together in Baltimore at a different station, he left for Boston, and after a few years helped me get my job up here. This was one of my favorite podcasts because we really get into the passion that radio is to both of our careers. We also discuss how being a parent affects his job and vice versa. I’m really glad to have Jackson talk about this openly because, even though I’m not a parent, it’s something that worries me every day. Worried about it ruining my career, worried I won’t like my child or I’ll feel resentment towards him. Spoiler alert: He doesn’t have those feelings, but he acknowledges that it’s possibility in other people. Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester. The 1st Who Cares?! Report w/ Deadair Dennis on The Jackson Blue Show. 07/20/10

Reporter, Writer, & Musician David Tanklefsky
04/07/2016 Duração: 02h46minMy guest on the podcast this week is reporter, writer, and musician David Tanklefsky. Continuing with radio month (even though it’s now July), Davis is a fellow radio coworker. He and I work together, he as the traffic reporter, me as the producer. He is currently on TV as the in-house morning traffic reporter for local cable television station NECN/New England Cable News as their in-house morning news traffic reporter. In this episode we talk about the difference between television news and radio, getting his start after college by doing minor league baseball play-by-play coverage, his transition into writing, and his music career both solo and with the band The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow. At the end of the podcast is his song Fools from WTR. Thanks for listening, subscribing, and please leave a review on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play. Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester & The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow.

Radio Producer & Musician Scott Lester
19/06/2016 Duração: 02h18minContinuing with radio month here on the podcast my guest this week is good friend Scott Lester. He is both the producer for syndicated radio shows The Kane Morning Show and Club Kane and a musician. We talk about his career in radio, music, how he got started in both, the progression so far, and what the future might hold for both jobs. And we mention little bit about his dog and how adorable he is. Not is Scott a friend and former coworker he is also the person who wrote the music on this podcast. At the end of the podcast is his song Sunsets & Car Wrecks from his solo band Scott Lester & What Army which you can checkout on Soundcloud, as well as his other band Letterbox. Thanks for listening, subscribing, and please leave a review on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play. Radio month will continue on the podcast next week. Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester. (aka this episode’s guest)

Radio Personality Josie
13/06/2016 Duração: 02h24minThank you so much for downloading and listening to this week’s episode. This is kicking off a month of all radio people guests. All friends who work in the business of radio informing and entertaining people every day. My first guest is Joanna/Josie/Jo, however you know her from TMZ, WHFS & MIX 106.5 in Baltimore, from radio in Hanover, PA or just from being a fun awesome person at a concert or bar near you. I’m so glad that I could get Jo on the podcast to catch with her and to get her to do her first ever podcast. If you want to hear deep inner workings of radio conversation, that isn’t held back one bit, then you’re in for a treat because this is the podcast episode (and month) for you. Be sure to follow Josie on twitter using the hashtag #WheresJo? Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester. (aka next week’s guest)

Proposal Writer, BCF Winner, & Comedian Al Park
30/05/2016 Duração: 01h37minThis week on the podcast I sat down and talked about proposal writing, winning comedy competitions, and starting out working the road with comedian Al Park. Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester. (And more music to come on future episodes of the podcast. So, stay tuned for that.)

TMZ Employee, Booker, Comedian Alex Gettlin
04/05/2016 Duração: 02h24minMy guest on the podcast this week is my friend and comedian Alex Gettlin from Comic Insite. We talk about his time working for TMZ, being a tour guide, and we get into a little bit of comedy business talk discussing running shows and other comedians and specials. This was a fun chat, especially if you enjoy celebrity news/gossip. I don’t, but it was something that I need to know about when I was working in Top 40 radio. So it was fun to commiserate a little bit with someone else who had to know that stuff even if they didn’t want to. Alex helps produce a lot of fun shows here in Boston, so if you’re in the area check out his twitter or webpage to see what shows he has going on. For now, enjoy our chat and thank you for listening. Uber, Realtor, Comedian Don Zollo
06/03/2016 Duração: 02h04minMy guest on the podcast this week is comedian and Uber driver Don Zollo. I’ll warn/apologize now for the very long intro to this podcast. I go into a very LONG rant about my feelings towards ride-sharing apps, also I read you an article about current legislature being passed here in Massachusetts concerning Uber and Lyft. Which you can read here if you would like (or hear me read to you like a pissed off bedtime story). Don is a very funny comedian here in Boston. So I’m glad I was able to have him in here to talk about being an Uber Driver, a Realtor, and general talk about the comedy business and his brief time in L.A. Hope you enjoy the podcast, and if you disagree with any of my opinions about Uber or Lyft feel free to email or tweet at me; I’m willing to have a civil discussion about this. Nanny, Actor, Comedian India Pearl
29/02/2016 Duração: 01h56minThanks so much for listening to this week’s long awaited episode of the podcast. I say long awaited because it’s taken 3 weeks to get the computer I use for everything fixed, working, and put back together so I can get this episode online. Regardless, I’m glad to finally get this interview up with a very funny comedian, actress, and nanny, India Pearl. I met India here in Boston, shortly afterwards she moved to peruse acting and comedy in LA where she is also a Nanny, and a Party Princess, and works at a comedy club, and is working hard. We talk a lot about LA, the difference between there and Boston, how her job affects comedy and acting, and we talk deep about the club scenes as well. India was in a horror movie that just came out, The Inhabitants, which is available on Amazon. It was filmed here in the Boston area. If you’re into horror, this would be a good movie for you to check out. This was a fun podcast for me because I learned a lot of things I never knew nor thought about when it came to working wit

Waiter, Actor, Comedian Andy Ostroff
24/01/2016 Duração: 01h20minThank you so much for listening to this episode of the podcast. My guest is actor and comedian Andy Ostroff. Andy and I met at an open mic here in Boston when he just moved back to town from L.A. We were having a great, fun talk about acting, the SAG-AFTRA union, and comedy. So, we had to kind of recreate some of that conversation here for the podcast, which was a little bit fun to try do. We also talk a lot about acting classes, starting off doing comedy, and his experiences as a waiter and delivery guy when he first moved to L.A. Andy has some funny stories about the crazy places he has worked, I hope you enjoy them. Check out the horror movie Infernal that Andy starred in, now on Hulu. Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester.

Delivery Guy, Skier, Farmer, Comedian Jordan Handren-Seavey
20/01/2016 Duração: 01h57minJ Today on the podcast is my friend Jordan Handren-Seavey (which I probably said incorrectly, because that’s what I do sometimes). Jordan is a comedian from Maine, now living in Boston, who spends his days driving a delivery truck for a bakery. As you can imagine there’ll be a few choice words about Boston traffic in the podcast. He also at one time was a professional skier and grew up on a real, working farm. Jordan is a funny guy, with some interesting stories; so I’m really glad I was able to get him in here to talk about comedy and trying to get by in the real world. Also, sorry if this went up a little late, I’ve been having computer problems since Sunday night that I’ve been trying to fix… and so far I think I did. We’ll see. Thanks for downloading and listening to the podcast, for subscribing if you have (please do). If you like what you’ve heard or laughed more than, let’s say, 3 times, give it a review on iTunes, please. Enjoy! Music in this episode by my good friend Scott Lester.

Marine Biologist, Architect, Comedian Robyn Perkins
10/01/2016 Duração: 01h23minThanks again for downloading this episode of the podcast. A few months ago I sat down with a comedian from England, Robyn Perkins. Robyn is actually from Boston, moved to England, decided to start doing stand up comedy. We talked a lot of about the difference between how the comedy scene is in the UK compared to how it is here in the America (specifically Boston). I also asked Robyn a bit about her experiences being a woman in comedy, because as most people know, it’s very different than being a man in comedy. At the time of this recording Robyn had just quit her day-job to do comedy and promoting the regular shows she runs full-time. Last night I caught up with her while she was here visiting for the holidays. The good news is she hasn’t had to go back to working a real job to support comedy, THAT’S GREAT!! We also talk a little about Edinburgh Comedy Festival; which, if you don’t know, is a month long comedy festival in Scotland. If you never heard of it or been (like I haven’t) you’ll find it interesting I

Mascot, Comedian, Host John Paul Rivera
03/01/2016 Duração: 01h54minThanks for downloading the first episode of So What Do You Really Do? with my guest John Paul Rivera. John and I recorded this interview in my backyard in Boston a lot of months ago. Literally six or seven months ago. One night me, John, and couple other comedians were hanging around, talking and what not, when I mentioned the podcast. Right then I decided to have John Paul on because I knew if I didn’t set an actual record date, nothing would get done. I hate to admit, sometimes I’m a “up to the last minute deadline” kind of guy. John Paul, who is not only a hilarious comedian, is also a mascot for a local bowling alley in Boston. We talked about that, how he got into it, and how the hours he works before Red Sox games is actually kind of convenient for doing comedy. We also talk about his mother, who was also a comedian and a comedy side project of John Paul’s called The New York Past, which is a parody twitter account that posts funny, fictional New York Post style headlines. He has since stopped doing the

Episode 00
26/12/2015 Duração: 14minHey everyone. Thanks for at least checking out the So What Do You Really Do? podcast page; you’re one step closer to becoming a listener. I’m the host Deadair Dennis Maler, so get used to what my typing looks like. I’m a comedian from Baltimore, now living in Boston, and 16+ year radio veteran. I’m fortunate enough to know A LOT of people with interesting jobs, but also are working to become comedians, actors, artists, and other things. As you’ll hear in Episode 00, I want you to hear about these people. It’s a small clip show/introduction to what you can expect on each episode of the podcast. All of us are working so hard to make it in entertainment, and it isn’t easy. Because of that, there’ll be a lot of funny stories and interesting things. Especially the people I know that have, like, real adult careers. They don’t need to “make it” (whatever that’s supposed to mean), but they work so hard perfecting their craft because THAT is what they want to do. And I find it fascinating, and I hope you do as well. T
