Sound Bhakti

Kṛṣṇa has an intention. He's a person, He's there within our hearts, and his intention for us in the material world is one thing: just to turn our attention back to Him. I was considering how powerful Kṛṣṇa's intention is. Any one of us is free to give ourselves to anything in this world, and whenever we judge someone, we try to understand what their intention is. It's the powerful force of the living entity. But just imagine how powerful is the intention of Kṛṣṇa . If we can align with that—with His intention—then we've obtained the connection we're looking for, rather than having some independent idea about what to do or how to be happy. This chapter is important for meditation. Remembering what is the consequence of my own consciousness, that is, that I’m developing these bodies one after another. Arjuna asked about this in the *th chapter of the Bhagavad-Gita when he wants to know what karma is. Krishna says karma is the force of your own consciousness which is creating future situations, i.e., bodies, in which you’ll be forced to inhabit and carry on from there in material life. So, Krishna Consciousness is the simple switch that one can flip (sorry for the analogy—flip a switch, but it is like that), that if one considers that all of my work is for Krishna, and everything in the universe is paraphernalia to be used in the service of Krishna, then there’s a way in which one is no longer obligated or entangled by that. This verse, he's saying, "First remember, then fight." So, we all have our fighting duties to do in this life. Kṛṣṇa says, "Line it up: first remember me, then fight." Tasmāt sarveṣu kāleṣu, which means "at all times and all places," practice remembering me. Then he says, "Mām evaiṣyasy asaṁśayah," without a doubt. Now he emphasizes—actually, I sort of read into this verse the idea of practice, but the next verse, Kṛṣṇa very clearly tells us how to achieve this ultimate end in life. There are three rules. Would you like to know what they are? Yes (audience) : practice, practice, practice. They fit together well. Abhyāsa-yoga-yuktena cetasā nānya-gāminā paramaṁ puruṣaṁ divyaṁ yāti pārthānucintayan. ..when you give up the tendency to say, "This is mine." For instance, with intellectual property, we may hear something and then say, "Oh, that came from somebody else, but I'm going to present it as mine because I want to enjoy the fame of saying something that sounds witty." We don't admit it. Vraja Vihari Prabhu told me once, "When you give credit where credit is due, you don't lose credit." On the other hand, another Godbrother told me, "If you take credit where credit isn't due, later on, you'll be blamed for something you didn't do." You might wonder, "I didn't do anything; they blame me." It's because you claimed credit at one time. Devotees know these subtleties, that everything evens out in the world. It's okay to be who you are, which is a servant of Krishna. Counterintuitively, those who are simple servants, who want no fame, get the most fame. Madhavaendra Puri is an example. When we chant, we must concentrate our mind on the sound vibration, and in that way everything will be revealed one after another; the form, qualities, pastimes, etc. of the Lord. So, there's a way in which everyone has a capacity. When we take the mantras and when we take books—which are literary Kirtan—they get to carry it home, and the mantra goes on and on for generations so that people may take advantage of it. Writing is simply speech abstracted anyway. When we see the result ourselves, how people react to the mantra, how they come alive, it's in parallel. The parallel I'm making is that animals would be killed. Nowadays, asuryā nāma te lokā, andhena tamasāvṛtāḥ, tāḿs te pretyābhigacchanti, ye ke cātma-hano janāḥ (Śrī Īśopaniṣad, Mantra 3). It says there's a process by which the soul is veritably killed by getting involved with the material nature. The mind, which is meant to think of Krishna, becomes Jaḍa—dead like stone—and they can't think of anything except for matter, thinking, "Oh, I'm also dead stone." But when they come in contact with Hare Krishna, transcendent literature, and the association of devotees, we see that they come alive, and then our faith in the mantra grow
