Rob's Soapbox - Everything Isn't Covid
03/10/2021 Duração: 08minTo paraphrase Anne Hathaway’s character in “The Dark Knight Rises,” “There’s a storm coming…and you better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re all gonna wonder how we were so stupid as to have created this next great self-inflicted mess.” See, I told you? Paraphrased, liberties taken. After all of the insane stories we’ve heard about children with sniffles being sent home from school and adults from work, and being told not to come back without negative Covid test results, I suppose nothing should surprise me. After hearing about countless friends and their relatives who have previously known medical conditions, long before Covid, which attack the respiratory system, still being told that they were presumed positive for Covid after negative test results, I suppose I should have been better prepared. But when it actually happens to you, it does have more of an impact. While we can’t prove it, the RAD show is convinced, as are some of our doctors in hindsight, that we were on the fro

Rob's Soapbox - Labradors Are Enablers
26/09/2021 Duração: 06minIn my first 44 years of life, I never understood people who loved Labrador Retrievers…for starters, they’re the basic bitch dog, everyone has one, especially black labs.Plus, they’re dumb. Studies say that they are smart, but they’re not. They walk into walls, forget your commands, and constantly do the opposite of what they’re told. Hunters tell me that they’re great at doing their job of retrieving, most notably ducks, but that’s a pretty narrow field of expertise that don’t impress me much. And then came Scout.Well, technically first came, my wife Christina, who happened to have a black lab named Scout. At the time we met, the irony was palpable; my German Shepherd, Shep, had passed away and my newest, Maestro, wasn’t born yet so I had only Nellie, my all-white GSD. So here we were…me, white as snow, with my white dog, and my now wife, Christina, milk chocolate “black” with her lab. White guy, white dog, black chick, black dog. Get it?Anywho…I stole Scout from her. More accurately, he stole me. From the mom

Rob's Soapbox - Organized Happiness
12/09/2021 Duração: 07minI’m stealing from Queenie…shut up, it’s my birthday week.Last week, as we talked about things like vacations, concerts, and weddings, Queenie pushed back on how much she dislikes all forms of what she called “organized happiness,” further cementing the notion that she is the young female version of me. (Brilliant, self-aware, logical, and, most notably, humble). The hard truth is that whenever it is that you die, the following events will not be on your list of the ten greatest moments of your life:Your weddingYour proms Your high school or college graduationMost adults who have experienced any of those things, along with life, will tell you that those are the most overrated, overblown, and ultimately, unimportant moments in life. The marriage matters…the achievement of graduating and what you do with the experience matters; but the moments and events? Totally forgettable. In fact, if we may parse words, you’ll also completely forget things you’re told you will remember for the rest of your life, that seem, on

Rob's Soapbox - Emblem Of Now
06/09/2021 Duração: 06minWith a plethora of possible topics, I found myself struggling for a tone or direction this week. It’s the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and there are endless things to be said, especially with the backdrop of America’s disastrous Afghanistan pullout last week. Countless false stories are being written about how America “pulled together,” after 9/11, and how different we’ve acted in the face of Covid. Obviously, those writers didn’t actually live through the events in 2001, lest they’d remember that less than a month after the Towers fell, we were back at each other’s throats. Absolutely nothing about America’s reaction and response to Covid is surprising nor dissimilar to 20 years ago. Additionally, the entire world is at each other’s throats disagreeing over the virus; let’s not pretend we’re special.https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2021/09/03/911-vs-covid-19-us-responses-unity-divison/5695433001/ Speaking of Afghanistan, the Taliban is going door-to-door hunting for Americans to s

Episode 15 - RAD pROBcast - Christina on Afghanistan
31/08/2021 Duração: 55minBy popular demand, my wife Christina joins me and reflects on her year of deployment in Afghanistan and how she views the events of the past few weeks. Was her service, and the sacrifices of others worth it? She also shares some stories of her time there including the moment a detainee she was interrogating got his hands on her. There are some fun moments, too, like when we demonstrate how our sofa attacked my hand and when she attempts to explain why our drinking glasses suddenly no longer fit in our cup holders.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Rob's Soapbox - Where Is That Damn Pony?
29/08/2021 Duração: 11minThere’s a famous story about twin 5-year-old boys with opposite personalities that perfectly fits today’s times and our seemingly never-ending battle to find contentment and calm in today’s America. Of the twins, one of them is chronically pessimistic, while the other is annoyingly optimistic. The latter of the two seems almost delusionally happy in even the most dour of circumstances. In an attempt to dampen his outlook, just to show him that the world isn’t always great, his dad took him to a room piled to the ceiling with horse manure. But instead of wrinkling his nose in disgust, the optimistic little punk emitted a yelp of delight as he climbed to the top of the pile, dropped to his knees, and began gleefully digging out scoop after scoop with his bare hands. “What do you think you're doing?” the father asked, baffled “With all this manure,” the little boy replied, “there must be a pony in here somewhere!” With that as a backdrop, here is an excerpt from an email the RAD show received last week

Rob's Soapbox - Enjoy A Poo
22/08/2021 Duração: 07minI realize that people of all ages are constantly opining about the trappings of technology, while, (ironically), usually typing on a keypad and/or staring at a screen. Let’s be real, you’re reading this on such technology. Just because people are hypocrites, it doesn’t mean that they are also wrong. To be clear, I love technology and believe, on a whole, this is an amazing time to be alive vis a vis innovation. More information and access is always a better thing, even when it exposes how stupid and dangerous a society is. The truth is, though, that we can’t, individually fix this rotten cultural cesspool we live in, but we can do some high-quality maintenance on ourselves. Countless studies show time after time, the dangers of screen time. Did you know there’s even a name for it (of course there is, everything has a title…) it’s called Screen Dependency Disorder, which is a stupid name because it doesn’t create an effective acronym. Obviously, Screen Addiction Disorder would have

Rob's Soapbox - I'm Old, You're Stupid
15/08/2021 Duração: 11minThe endless dance in American society is that of the old and the young thinking equally as disparagingly of each other. Kids these days are rude, awkward, lazy, weak, entitled, selfish, tech-obsessed snowflakes who have no work ethic. Old people, by the way, are now defined essentially as everyone over the age of 45 (since the absolute oldest millennials are turning 40 this year, 40 can’t be old…unless you’re in Generation Z, then old people begin being old at 30, and you’re elderly if you’re over 50). Old people are mean, out of touch, bigots, who destroyed the economy a decade and a half ago, making life far much harder than it had to be, and like to walk around reminiscing about “the good old days,” which is easy to do since they destroyed the planet that other generations will never get to enjoy, and they’re just generally slow and in the way.Let’s establish first that age is both a number and a mindset. My co-host Dawn has been in her 50’s mentally since she was in her twenties, while my 90-year-old fath

Episode 13 - RAD pROBcast - Money Buys Happierness - Part 2
13/08/2021 Duração: 47minIt’s the second in our series “Money Buys Happierness,” and by popular demand we begin with the long form answer as to why I prefer leasing over buying vehicles, including the rare exceptions to the rule. From there, we discuss Investments that aren’t actually investments, but people often claim they are. Most notably, morons who say that putting in a pool will “greatly increase the value of the home when we go to sell it,” a total fallacy. We talk about the difference between spending our money on things we enjoy, versus actually investing, and why the two of them almost never match up (which is ok). Boats, pools, and collectibles, are all fun to someone, but almost none of us knows someone who is independently wealthy from selling off their Beanie Babies.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Rob's Soapbox - Care Less
08/08/2021 Duração: 13minThe answer to almost all of your questions related to contentment, happiness, and living your best life, is summed up in two words: Care less. Not careless, as in “behave in a haphazard manner,” but care…less. Before I continue, a quick aside…stop saying “I could care less,” when you are trying to convey to someone that you are bored, have no interest in what is happening, or are incapable of giving two blanks. If you COULD care less, then you care, because you have some still to give up. Once you reach the point where you COULDN’T care less you have stopped caring and have nothing at all left to surrender, for you have already allowed all caring to escape you. Please make proper adjustments moving forward…or don’t, I couldn’t care less.Almost everyone’s hang ups in life, whether it be related to intimate relationships, friendships, finances, or even hobbies and interests, is that they care too much. “hang ups,” in this context is meant as a term that holds us back and keeps us from reaching our true full poten

06/08/2021 Duração: 01h16minMy wife Christina and our friend Danielle (a maggot and former cardboard cutout) discuss the etiquette of sending unsolicited naked photos of yourself, how far we’d all go for our spouses, the trappings of being “too white,” and why it’s not a compliment to say “you’re pretty for a black girl.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
