Emily talks to former jockey Jon Kunitake

Jon Kunitake moved to the mainland after high school and landed in California as a stable worker. Within a few years he was a professional jockey on his way to a 20 year riding career that took him all over the country and into many winner’s circles. Jon will talk about his start in horse racing and how sports have helped him as a entrepreneur. A respected masters runner today, Jon is one of the founders of the UCC Coffee Kunitake Farms Kona Marathon taking place on Sunday June 28 with a marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k event. Dinah, owns Dinah’s Hair Salon in Holualoa which become a gathering spot in center of Holualoa for many. She’ll shares stories about fishing with her father and family members at Old Kona Airport when they were growing up and the support she enjoys giving her niece who is involved in BIIF sports. She’ll share how the Kona Marathon has become a family experience for so many years.

Chick played baseball and basketball for Konawaena 1953-55. Minoru “Gabby” Inaba was his coach and mentor. Chick talks about what a big influence Minoru was and how he would not have been able to participate in sports without his support and how they remained friends all their lives.

Kei-Lin Cerf , Executive Director of the Hualalai Ohana Foundation will share information about the 5th Annual Hualalai Ohana Foundation Golf Tournament and Auction Event coming up this Friday April 3. $250 per person includes the golf tournament, dinner and auction.

Full Life is an organization that empowers people with disabilities had over 300 differently abled people participate last year. With the longtime support of Captain Rick Green, Hawaii Lifeguard Surf Instructors, Helena’s Ocean Tours and Full Life over 500 are expected to participate in this year’s Kahalu’u Surf Day. Sean Maekawa is a Volunteer Assistant Golf Coach to Casey Martin for the University of Oregon Ducks. Sean was the 2007 Hawaii High School Champion and then played for the Ducks 2007-2011 and has been playing professionally since. We've been friends for long time so it was interesting to hear Sean talk about what he is learning about himself through this opportunity in his golf career to mentor the team members and work with Casey and be mentored by Casey.Sean was in the Waikoloa Beach Junior Golf Program as a keiki and later helped with the program. Emily talks about Matt Rosato winning one of the BIIF golf tournaments at Waikoloa Beach Resort where he learned to play golf in their Junior Program as well. Dick Mudry, long time golf writer including writing the copy for 10 years for the Masters Annual, a publication of Augusta National reflects on how the Masters has evolved from it's early years. Dick reflects on the absence of his friend Arnold Palmer at the Masters, having passed away last year and how PGA player Sam Saunders, Arnold's grandson has helped carry on Arnie's legacy. He shares some thoughts on the current state of the PGA, LPGA, and Champions Tour. Dick lives in Florida and is a forever fan of his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. I had an opportunity to take the Hawaii Forest and Trails Kohala Waterfall Adventure recently up in Hawi area at north end of the Island of Hawaii. I stopped by Bike Works Beach and Sport, Queens Marketplace, Kohala Coast, Island of Hawaii and had a good time talking story with owner and long time friend Grant Miller, who is part of the Big Island Mountain Bike ohana.After leaving Grant, I ended up calling Jeff Waraniak, who I met last summer in my hometown Detroit. Jeff has been an Associate Editor at HOUR Detroit Magazine, soon to be moving to Denver as an assistant editor for 5280 Magazine. I asked Jeff to share with our listeners a story he had told me about reaching out to the Big Island Mountain Bike ohana couple years ago and the warm welcome they gave him.
