Rich Bell created the Hawaii Cycling Club Century Ride to remember his dad, celebrate and benefit North Hawaii Hospice who had been helpful to his family. Malik,a senior at Kealakehe, was introduced to cycling by the Kealakehe Waveriders Tri Club. I met Isaiah McKinnon, Deputy Mayor of Detroit to Mayor Mike Duggan in the 1970's. I had opened Emily's Across the Street next to the London Chop House. Isaiah was a Detroit Police officer and we were part of his area. He was always so supportive of our efforts to create activity in the area that had been drained of tenants and people by the opening of the Renaissance Center. When we created the Emily Detroit Run, Isaiah totally got our intention to showcase downtown Detroit. We (Emily's) were supporters of the Detroit Police All Stars Athletic Team. For years I've had taped to my wall a photo of the team including Isaiah in 1980 proudly wearing "Say nice things about Detroit" t-shirts at the Police Olympics in Toronto. I've stayed in touch with Isaiah over the years. Professional golfer Sean Maekawa, looks back at joining the Waikoloa Junior Golf Program when he was a keiki and talks about the encouragement he has received from mentors, his parents, and Waikoloa Beach Resort over the years to pursue professional golf. He shares how being involved with the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association and Waikoloa Junior Golf helped him win the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Individual golf titles from 2004-2007 while playing for Honokaa. Having earned a golf scholarship to the University of Oregon, he shares his experience playing in the Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings' Course Amer Ari Intercollegiate, a highly rated Division I tournament with the Oregon Ducks before he turned professional. Kris Hazard, Rotary Club of Kona Volunteer Co-Chair with Larry Webb for the PGA TOUR Champions Tour Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai-Four Seasons Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii gives an overview of the roles of more than 400 volunteers. The Rotary Club of Kona volunteer effort at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai has resulted in more than a million dollars going back to the Big Island community from the PGA and Mitsubishi. Recipients are the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation, The Daniel Sayre Foundation and Big Island Junior Golf. The Golf Channel broadcast will on Thursday-Saturday January 21-23.

Dave Senko, PGA TOUR Champions Tour Media Official talks story about the 2016 PGA TOUR Champions Tour Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai-Four Seasons Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. 43 players earned their way into the prestigious tournament. Dave shares how sharing information with the public and media has changed over the years and including getting interviews and real time information out on the internet. Dave's work included working with the Buffalo Bills before his 20 years with the PGA TOUR. He attended University of Hawaii-Manoa and attributes the evolution of his career to having started with being an intern in the Athletic Dept at U of H and working at sporting events during his college days. He shares what he tells young people about getting a jump start on creating opportunities for careers after college.

Kona resident, Karlyn Pipes, shares her journey on the way to writing her autobiography "The Do-Over", an inspiring story about recovery, hope, and second chances. Destined for Olympic medals and Wheaties boxes with her swimming potential she was unable to keep up with the expectations. She turned her back on the sport and replaced the liquid of the pool with that of the bottle. Pipes talks about those who helped her turn her life around resulting in over 200 Masters swimming records. She is very candid about her ups and downs regarding her personal comeback.

My friend and fellow Detroiter Tara Revyn, waited 10 years for a bone marrow transplant which she received from a 35 year old stranger from Hawaii. She also had myelodysplastic syndrome, is Korean, was adopted, so her family members are Caucasian. Recently Robin Roberts, Good Morning America anchor,former ESPN Reporter, and member of Women's Basket ball Hall of Fame received a bone marrow transplant last year from her sister for myelodysplastic syndrome. What a blessing she did not have to wait to find a match. Tara, however, without known blood relatives turned to the Be the Match Registry. Janet Higa-Miller shares her experience participating in the XTERRA Freedom Fest on Oahu where she and four other Big Islanders qualified for the XTERRA World Championship in November on Maui. Grant Miller, owner of Bike Works with Janet, earned a spot along with Wendy Minor, Bruce Wacker and William McMahon. They will be in the field of 800 athletes from 28 countries and 42 states. Janet talks about the efforts of PATH (Peoples Advocacy Trails Hawaii) to work on creating trails and bike lanes for non motorized vehicles and their safety classes for keiki. Specs Howard School of Media Arts is an educational institution dedicated to preparing people for a career in radio and television broadcasting, graphic design and digital media arts. It's named after its founder Specs Howard, born Jerry Liebman in 1926 and a radio pioneer who entertained audiences for 3 decades. Originally the school was opened in 1970 as Specs Howard School of Broadcasting. I remember when it opened. In 2009 the name was changed to Specs Howard School of Media Arts that reflected the broader scope of the training that's offered. It has been an important educational institution for many people who have entered into the broadcast industry by way of having a Specs Howard School of Media Arts education. Alisa Zee is host of this CBS Detroit Radio Sunday Edition, and Specs is her father. She attended Specs Howard, has taught at Specs Howard and has attained many of her goals in broadcasting including her daily stories heard all over the world on iHEARTRadio 24/7 News station. Tom Page, Detroiter, talks about his law enforcement career in Detroit and LA. Tom's Alma Mater is U of D. where Criminal Justice is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Education. Tom serves on the Dean's Advisory Board. Tom integrates his love of Detroit into his volunteer efforts to encourage people to use a bike for recreation, exercise and learning about all the good things in Detroit. Tom organizes and supports so many of the daily bike events in Detroit that are much more than a bike ride. I Tom used to come into Emily's Across the Street in late 70's-80's. We reconnected at the Shinola Detroit Block Party June 2014. He had on his "Detroit Cops are Tops" shirt from Emily's with a fun story to go with it and a big hug. We've been in touch ever since.
