  • Suggestions Macho Culture Contributing To Clare's High Rate Of Male Suicide

    04/11/2024 Duração: 16min

It's been suggested a lingering "macho" culture is keeping men in Clare from talking about their emotions. Newly-published statistics show Clare had the highest rate of suicide of any county last year, with males making up four fifths of those who died by suicide here. In 2023, a total of 302 people lost their lives as a result of suicide. Of these, a staggering 77% were male. In Clare alone, 25 people died by suicide last year which is the highest figure per capita and the third-highest overall after Dublin and Cork. Chairperson of Clare Suicide Bereavement Support Dan O'Connor says although this must be taken seriously, he hopes with the right supports in place, it will soon level out. Of the 25 people who fell victim to suicide here in 2023, 20 were males which accounts for four fifths of the county's total. This is the highest figure for male suicide in Clare since records began. Despite progress, it's often argued that a stigma still exists around discussing mental health as a male. Director of

Noel Tierney of Tierney Cycles on Abbey Street claims a particularly challenging aspect of navigating the ongoing works has been engaging with local representatives.

  • Shannon Resident Of Defective Celtic Tiger Home Criticises Lack Of Action On Interest Repayments

    04/11/2024 Duração: 04min

A Shannon resident of a defective Celtic Tiger era apartment has criticised the Government for failing to minimise their financial burden. The Department of Housing has begun developing a pilot scheme to reimburse households who've had to fix structural, water ingress and fire safety flaws at houses and duplexes built between 1991 and 2013. Up to 240 homes in Brú Na Sionna are affected and while the estate's management company has progressed remedial works, the applicable interest levies that have to be repaid will not be covered by the state.
