Dr. Lisa really DOES give a sh*t. Dr. Lisa Levy S.P. (Self-Proclaimed) has been performing unlicensed psychotherapy since 2001 - on stage, on the street and in her studio/office. Shes better than a lot of certified shrinks because psychoanalysis and therapy is not a job for her, its an obsession. Dr. Lisa will get to the essence of what makes people who they are and what their obstacles have been, and maybe help solve some issues along the way. She doesnt mess around either, why waste time since shes not making money on having people come back?"A Shrink with Stage Presence."- New York Times"Riotously Funny!" - London Times

DLG1819 Jason Zinoman, author of "Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night" digs into Letterman's self-loathing mindset with Dr. Lisa.
17/08/2023 Duração: 59minHow could someone so self-loathing as David Letterman)be able to accomplish all that he accomplished which includes having an indelible stamp on American culture? That's the basis of the discussion I have Jason Zinoman, author of the recent seminal book on David Letterman: Letterman, The last great King of Late Night. https://www.amazon.com/Letterman-Last-Giant-Late-Night/dp/0062377213/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Jason is also New York Times Comedy Critic (first and only). I love Jason’s writing and the particular comics he highlights, so I am really excited to talk to someone who, in my mind, super knows his shit about comedy. Also, I had a Stupid Pet Trick appearance in 1986, so I am fan-ravenous about getting Jason’s close up perspective on Letterman, Letterman's managerial style, as well as his creative process and his relationships with ladies. Plus – I got to dig into Jason a bit personally; how does someone, seemingly so normal and well adjusted, manage a great career and stable family

DLG342 Author, designer, painter, and educator, Laurie Rosenwald is an advocate for making mistakes.
06/06/2023 Duração: 59minLaurie is an incredibly accomplished creative person. She has work in every major publication, author of several books, important design awards... I could go on. Nowadays she is focused on her book and workshop, How to Make Mistakes on Purpose Dr. Lisa is upfront about her counter-transference. She identities with Laurie as far as age and career in commercial art, except Laurie soared where Dr. Lisa feels she flailed partly because of her self-esteem. Well, also, Laurie IS exceptionally talented. Laurie is unusual as a creative person in that she is so grounded and forward moving with her abilities. Laurie gives us insight as to how she got that way — her ability to thrive through her childhood with strong survival skills. DLG341 LA Comedian, Michael Regilio is back in town and he has some interesting research on porn.
03/06/2023 Duração: 59minMichael Regilio, a super smart, HILARIOUS, LA comic, was on DLG about a year ago. We learned quite a bit about his background which includes him having to wear an eyepatch as a child. Since that time Michaels career as a comedian has really accelerated and he stopped by the Radio Free Brooklyn Studios while he's in NYC performing. See him while he's in NYC HERE. Recently Michael was hired by the Jordon Harbinger podcast to research and co-host his featured Sunday show-Skeptical Sundays. The most recent episode (hasn’t even aired yet) that he’s researched is about the use of pornography. Did you know that there’s a rising (pardon the pun) problem with young men who can no longer get erections with actual women? And the younger they start the harder it is to get their brains rewired so they can have sex without porn.

DLG330 Dr. Lisa checks in with comedian Myq Kaplan.
10/05/2023 Duração: 59minMyq Kaplan is back for his 3rd time on Dr. Lisa gives a shit. We reflect on the last time Myq was on which was during the pandemic. I had 3 topics to discuss with Myq-we got to touch on all of them. Some of these topics followed up from a 2020 Dr. Lisa episode, DLG235 Comedian Myq Kaplan has an Myq-like, productive journey to a good quarantined relationship. And there's another episode with Myq from 2016, titled: 1601_DLG_Comedian Myq Kaplan talks about his previous therapy w/ Dr. Lisa How do you manage to have such a healthy, mature relationship with your girlfriend Rini? Does your use of psychedelics help you with understanding yourself and does it help with this? Your relationship with language seems like the medium you use for your art (comedy). How did your specific relationship with language come into being? Since the last time we spoke on air was during the pandemic—curious to know what effect the pandemic had for you, especially as a touring comic. More about Myq and his upcoming show IMPERFECT

DLG329 Lindsay Goldwert goes for unrelenting growth — and it shows in her career path.
10/05/2023 Duração: 55minLINDSAY GOLDWERT explores thoughtfully. She's in touch with her feelings, thoughts and creative impulses where her talent drives her to accomplish and explore. And her achievements are as much a bi-product of her intentions, not simply her goals. She is currently the Content/Editorial Director for Adulted Magazine, A wellness magazine for actual grown-ups—a career which she loves. It wasn't a straight line for Lindsay, there was a career in journalism, a book: BOW DOWN Lessons from Dominatrixes on how to get everything you want. Her book talks about a world where the usual power dynamic is turned on its head. Where women not only stop apologizing, but seize—and enjoy—control. Lindsay really went behind the scenes and got to know the culture—so interesting to hear her take on it. She also talked about a turning point in her life where she became a comedian. We talk in detail about this too. Her husband has been by her side for most of this, so it really rounds out our session to hear about how her life integr

DLG328 Comedian David Mills is here from London to spill before his performances at Pangea, April 22 + 29!
11/04/2023 Duração: 59minI saw David Mills perform in London a few months ago and I was blown away by his unusually incisive hilarious comedy and stage presence. I contacted the club in London that he had performed at and Voila! A few months later, he is in the studio and across the mic from me!! I loved spending time with David on air and you will too. He's a very sharp, disciplined creative person, from a family of six kids, he was born in a small town in Pennsylvania. He had a salesman father—his family moved around A LOT. And church every Sunday—which can be conflicting for a young person who knows he's gay, As a professional comedian, David has lived in San Francisco to New York to London and now he's in town!. Because of his large family upbringing, David has really developed an independence and resilience that has allowed him to thrive in the crazy entertainment industry. Award winning cabaret comedian, David Mills returns to Pangea with his new song and rant routine, glamour + despair with Jody Shelton on piano. Two nights-

DLG327 Pablo Helguera's path to working as a socially engaged artist is as original, deep and wide as the work he's creating.
10/04/2023 Duração: 59minPablo Helguera is an world-renown artist, performer, cartoonist, poet, writer, author of several books, advice columnist, The Estheticist, lecturer/educator, a professor at the New School, father, husband and he can sing and write songs! To understand Pablo and his work, you really need to listen to this episode of how he has evolved into the artist he's become. Pablo was born in 1971 in Mexico City to a family of classical musicians. His brother, 9 years older, was a poet and a philosopher. Pablo describes how his day to day, his brother was teaching him, opening his mind and having him read all this heavy philosophy shit at a young age. So while you were playing Nintendo, he was reading Nietzsche. All of this powerful and unusual education helped create a precocious young man. When Pablo was still in his twenties, he was awarded a Creative Capital Grant to realize his project: School of Panamerican Unrest. The core of the project consisted of a traveling schoolhouse which made 30 stops between the U.S. stat

DLG326 Artist Colin Radcliffe generously shares some intimate details behind his highly personal, complex yet entertaining work.
22/03/2023 Duração: 59minI've watch Colin's career quickly advance as I knew it would from the first time I saw his work, right after he landed in New York. Colin is queer, brilliant, funny and ADORABLE. He's very well liked as anyone could see at his recent opening and birthday party. Colin's porcelain sculptures are birthed from the world of modern dating with apps. Colin seems to have a healthy perspective on all of it. He's not invulnerable, but he is sensible. So this session is a great perspective on Colin's work and the very real relationship between one's life and one's art. He has had to learn to manage a chronic illness which I think has enabled him a deeper understanding of being a human in general. Colin has a very bright future - we talk about that too. MOST IMPORTANTLY DO NOT MISS HIS SOLO SHOW, THIRST TRAP at The Java Project!!! Up now until the end of March. The Java Project is located in Greenpoint at 252 JAVA STREET, Brooklyn, New York. DLG324 Philip Markel is making it happen and not just for himself-all of the funny people are invited.
09/03/2023 Duração: 59minPersonally, I’m a HUGE FAN of the Brooklyn Comedy Collective in Williamsburg, so when, Philip Markel, the Founder and Artistic Director agreed to come in for a Dr. Lisa session, I was thrilled. Philip is the chilliest version of a Type A personality that I have met. He’s warm, welcoming, exuding a contagious sort of joy. The most obvious question in my mind was “How does he do it all?”, but our session went far past that simple question. Philip is a multitalented, (improv, singing, dancing, writing, teaching) creative person who is running a collective with 3 linked locations and a staff of 20 people, since 2018, all while doing his own work! My take is Philip is that he is an unusual combo of talent, drive and business smarts. You don’t often meet people like him with this much talent and drive, establishing collectives for creative people, I think because most people that have that combo of skills go for the money. Comedy is not a get rich quick pursuit. I read this autobiographical story that Philip had w

DLG323 A funny/serious session with comedy mentor Lana Siebel.
01/03/2023 Duração: 59minI met comedian/writer/actress/super mom/wife Lana Siebel about 2 years ago when I started going to comedy open mics regularly. I honestly don't think I would have stuck with it without her. Lana is hugely talented but also a leader and a great example/inspiration for a creative in any field. We touch on Lana's journey as a Ukrainian refugee to America at age 7—for a deep dive into her experience of coming to the US—listen to an earlier episode with Lana HERE: Lana Siebels's life story is hard to imagine. When I first met Lana, not long ago, she was just on the verge of transitioning from the pandemic into doing comedy full-time. In this episode we talk about how Lana is living her goal of performing comedy—on stage almost everyday!—as her job. It means driving/traveling to perform, going out every night to do her work and all that comes with it, while maintaining a close relationship with her growing son and her husband. I think the fact that her kid enjoys being funny and making videos with her helps. At thi

DLG320 David Cote, theater critic, playwright, and opera librettist is disarmingly real here - to our benefit.
23/01/2023 Duração: 59minCopy: David Cote is a theater critic, playwright, and opera librettist who has written for numerous publications such as 4 Columns, Observer, The A.V. Club and Time Out New York. He’s written popular companion books about the Broadway hits Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Wicked, Jersey Boys, and Spring Awakening. In his past life as an actor, he worked with Richard Foreman, Richard Maxwell and Iranian exile auteur Assurbanipal Babilla. He is also one of three artists taking part in the inaugural Ecker Fellows Program at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, which aims to explore connections between psychoanalysis and art — therefore he is a perfect guest/patient and our session does not disappoint. David is from a tiny town in New Hampshire—Gilmanton Iron Works, which has a population of 3,945 (it was about 2,200 when he grew up). DLG318 Author/Actor/Writer Robert Galinsky takes us on a journey to Riker's Island where he runs workshops for teens.
07/01/2023 Duração: 59minRobert Galinsky’s had a very rough couple of years with his father growing up. His father had undiagnosed depression which as we discussed, he worked through and resolved. His childhood experiences motivated him to heal and help others has given him a more than full life as an artist: an actor, a writer, director, teacher, coach. Galinsky's suburban life drew him to find out directly how struggling people lived. Galinsky has been running youth writing workshops in Riker's Island for the past 7 years, so he helps us imagine what life is like in Riker's; the teens who are held there what they dream of, how they got there, what they hope to accomplish upon release. After this session, I felt that if there were more Galinsky's and if there was a pipeline for people to become Galinskys, the world would be a better place. When asked about this, Robert says, we're a consumer society and we don't have the will to deal with these issues. I agree, but I will think about incarcerated teens differently because of our t

DLG317 Artist Scooter LaForge's life is a great example of a life in art to me.
23/12/2022 Duração: 59minArtist Scooter LaForge is a delight. To be honest, I somehow felt like connecting with him on this show was healing for me-now who’s the shrink!? Scooter’s work is amazing and so instinctual- he cannot not do it. Even though he’s worked with big names like he is as humble as can be. So much to learn from his perspective—growing up as a gay man in a tiny town in Arizona. I have to say I was envious hearing of all the free-range outdoor time he had, but alas the town, it’s sounds really small and devoid of gays which means a pretty homogenous group of people (boring!) Scooter is the best of what an artist is—someone fueled by their work and satisfied because of it. He complimented me a lot, so I’m going to give him an A as a guest rating. Follow and learn more about Scooter HERE: https://www.scooter-laforge.com/ Instagram @scooterlaforge @scooter_laforge_a_life_of_art/ BIO: Scooter Laforge began his love affair with art at a very young age while growing up in the small town of Las Cruces, New Mexico. DLG316 Edward Farrell gets down to serious business in comedy
21/12/2022 Duração: 59minI had dropped into Brklyn Comedy Club on my way home recently and caught this comedian, Edward Farrell, performing and I loved his act—it was highly original as was his character on stage. When I got home I looked him up and found out he owned 2 bars and the club that I saw him perform in! I got in touch with him and voila‑he was on the show! I dug in heartily and got to know Edward a bit through this session. He’s an introvert with an extrovert’s career. He’s from a long line of self-starters. He’s had mentors like Steve Lewishttps://stevelewisdesign.com/clubs We delve into how he’s gotten to where he is and took a look at where he’s heading. His club is great. DLG315 Sean Spada takes us behind the curtain for his new album, "The Wild Ride".
06/12/2022 Duração: 59minTom Gallo of Look at My Records describes Sean and his new album better and more accurately than I can: "SEAN SPADA is the real deal, a hard-working, consummate-pro piano everyman who would never dream of insultingly patronizing the sad sacks at the bar because clearly he identifies with and counts himself among the sad sacks at the bar new album The Wild Ride… but either way it's a ride that never flies off the rails thanks to the ever-present guard rails of Sean’s sensitive, skillful piano playing to the point where I’m moved to proclaim The Wild Ride the world’s first psychedelic piano lounge yacht-rock-run-aground rock operetta, a character study of a piano man who may be “Set Up To Self Destruct” but who’s nonetheless “Getting on the Highway” with predictable results perhaps but all the more stirring for seeing it coming..." I've know Sean for a while and his music/music career has evolved in a pretty exciting way. He's got mad skills! The visualization of his music in his videos have added a serious cre

DLG314_Comedian Christian Finnegan's childhood was not funny...
24/11/2022 Duração: 59minChristian made a repeat visit to RFB so we could talk about his family history, which is pretty complex. You can see how it does make sense that he's a comedian though—a sharp sense of humor is a testament to his survival skills! His younger brother was born when Christian was 8 and his older brother was 10. His younger brother was born with a serious heart ailment which by necessity became the focus of his parents. His mother had Borderline Personality Disorder and was super dramatic. Let's just say this was hard on his dad too. His parents split up. Christian father enrolled Christian into a boarding school for performing arts when he reached high school age which set him free—well somewhat. This is an inspiring story of a resilient young man who became a successful comedian with a fantastic marriage in spite of a dramatically difficult beginning. DLG313 Photographer Kate Stremoukhova gives us the feeling of how surreal it was to be in the middle of bombing in Kyiv.
15/11/2022 Duração: 55minKate Stremoukhova is a talented artist and commercial photographer/videographer in business with her husband, living in Kyiv, Ukraine until 6 months ago. This session with Kate is so remarkable because I found her so relatable and she was very generous in sharing her experience living through bombings, leaving her home there and finally getting to NYC. She hasn’t seen her husband since she left as he is still in Ukraine. When she left her home, she only expected to be gone a few days and she has yet to be back. She is currently waiting for the paperwork so she can go back and see her husband. This session is very moving; Kate made real the surrealistic nature of not being able to imagine a war and then one day you are in it. Kate has gotten some work here and is helping teach art to Ukraine high school students who have moved here and are in a school that is half American and half Ukrainian. She does not have a concrete plan yet, which is unsettling yet freeing at the same time. Dr. Lisa was grateful for thi
