  • #210 - Chris Sheppard (Everyone Asked About You)

    23/01/2023 Duração: 02h15min

Today on the podcast we welcome Chris Sheppard from Everyone Asked About You. If you’re not aware, this band was a late 90s gem of a band that I missed myself during this time. After finding out about them through some friends at Numero Group and talking to Chris, they intersected and overlapped with many of the bands of the time in their home of Little Rock Arkansas. Chris and I talk a lot about where he’s from, seeing early emo bands, being in a band with a woman around that time, connecting with Ken Shipley from Tree Records who now runs Numero Group and the subsequent reunion shows and music being available again for the world. Plus we preview the upcoming Numero 20 showcase they’re playing in LA next month. Finally, we talk to Chris about his career now that I guarantee you will not want to miss. I have to say, talking to bands I never knew then but connect with instantly continues to affirm my belief in this special time as a genre and as a music scene. This band I would have been obsessed with back in

  • #209 - Erik Fisher (The Hated)

    17/01/2023 Duração: 01h57min

Today on the podcast, we welcome Erik Fisher from The Hated. The Hated were a 4 piece emo band from Annapolis Maryland who were active from 1985-1990. They are considered an early emo band and around the same time as many we know like Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, and Moss Icon. Thankfully, Numero Group has their music streaming and available. Go search it out. Now to the interview. For those that have been in college or had a really great teacher in high school perhaps. This is for you. That one class that you felt so engaged with someone and the flow back and forth on ideas kept on a path that enlightened both the student and the teacher. I let this one stay more open than usual because the flow of this with Erik, who is a professor by profession, is glorious to listen back on. If you haven’t had a class like this before, this is close to it. When the bell rings, you felt you could take on the world and a new appreciation for what you just learned. I learned so much talking to Erik about his perspective on

  • #208 - Justin Pearson (Three One G, Swing Kids, The Locust)

    14/11/2022 Duração: 01h14min

Today we welcome Justin Pearson. If that name is unfamiliar, head to Three One G dot com right now. Justin was and is a musical force. He’s been in a lot of projects over the years and worth diving into his work now with Dead Cross, Deaf Club or where I found out about him when I was younger with Swing Kids and then The Locust. Justin was a little older than me and hearing about his history with punk, hardcore, and the word emo was again eye opening for me as someone that only knows so much. Justin was honest and open about how he felt about the scene and is an inspiration for myself and hopefully you after listening to this interview. Again, search out Three One G, we’ll have links on Washed Up Emo dot com and dive into him if you’ve never heard about him or ride alongside with the emo nerd and get schooled from a legend. • #207 - Tim Kasher (Track by Track of Cursive's "Domestica")

    08/09/2022 Duração: 01h19min

Today we welcome Tim Kasher, again! He’s been on prior as a guest talking about his entire career and also was included in volume 2 of the Anthology of Emo book series, now we dive even deeper. This time we dive into the absolute classic “Domestica.” Released in June way back in 2000, this album released posthumously, really was an evolution of their last two records and started to almost restart the band out of chaos and unrest. The album, rumored to be about a divorce, as you will hear, is close but also far away as well. Tim was generous was his time to dive really deep into the album, cover, and every single track. Including some about Braces, a short lived band that was a 3 piece that you’ll hear on the reissue. Enough of me talking, this album is a shade over 30 minutes but we’ll spend the next hour to let Tim tell us all about “Domestica.” I hope you enjoy. Reissue is available via 15 Passenger. • #206 - Eva Alexiou-Reo (FATA Booking Agency)

    18/07/2022 Duração: 01h09min

Today we welcome Eva Alexiou-Reo, many of us know as Eva Fata. Think about it, you’re 18, living in Pennsylvania and some of the first bands you start booking are Hot Water Music, Elliott, and Jimmy Eat World. How’s that for a start? FATA Booking Company turned 25 in 2021 and still going strong today. Eva came up around a similar time and saw the emo boom first hand with booking and managing bands. Eva is someone I’ve wanted to have on for a long time and I’m so happy we had a chance to talk. You may even start your own business after this one, she’s that inspiring. We speak about emo and hardcore from the late 90s and the many ways that I can sneak in another band that was screamo during that era. Kip has a long history of being in the industry across scoring and bands from the 90s through today. I encourage you to search out and find his music and head over to KipUhlhorn.com  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #204 - Sonny Kay (Angel Hair, The VSS, GSL)

    07/02/2022 Duração: 01h19min

Today on the podcast we welcome an absolute legend. Sonny Kay. You may know Sonny from Angel Hair which put out records on Gravity Records or his own label Gold Standard Laboratories or maybe The VSS. If not, that is totally fine. You’ll learn about them all and other projects he was a part of over the next hour or so. Sonny is a pillar in the early days of emo/screamo/hardcore that shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s someone that even if you haven’t heard his bands, you’ve seen his work as an artist for The Mars Volta and many others. I can’t stress enough how much I implore you to search Sonny out, his music, his art and projects. Learn more about Sonny at SonnyKay dot com. Sit back and listen to one of the original legends. It’s an absolute honor to have him on the podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #203 - Cam DiNunzio (Lazycain, Denali)

    24/01/2022 Duração: 01h40min

Today we welcome Cam DiNunzio from Lazycain and Denali. Today, he makes his wares as a composer and music supervisor. We spoke about his early days in Virginia Beach, moving to Richmond, and his thoughts on music as he navigated and survived the emo label. Cam’s contribution to music, this genre, and further throughout the musical landscape is a reason for you to stick around if you haven’t heard of the bands or his name. If you have, you’re in for a treat. We dive into the Lazycain and Denali days. At the start as context, I mention Cam’s bandmate John, who we worked together when I first moved to NYC back in 2000. With that said, as comforting as when a 718 area code calls a 917, listening back this felt more like a conversation, not an interview. I hope you enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. • #202 - Josh English (Six Going On Seven)

    19/10/2021 Duração: 01h43min

Today we welcome Josh English from the band Six going On Seven. Josh was raised in Portland Oregon, seasoned in Boston and an influence on many bands you love today. He should be on the tip of your tongue in this scene. Maybe after this interview the band and Josh will be. Their influence personally has stayed with me for years from their days on Some Records in the late 90s to "American’t (or Won’t)" on Big Wheel Recreation released back in 2001. The band shortly broke up and their CDs and 7”s I had have been staring back at me since. I honestly always had Josh on a list to interview and as this podcast creeps past its 200th episode and 10th year, it was an honor to speak to Josh about his life and what’s he got up next in his career. • #201 - Ryan Shelkett (Cross My Heart, Liars Academy)

    11/10/2021 Duração: 01h47min

Today we welcome Ryan Shelkett from Blank, Cross My Heart, Dead Red Sea, and Liars Academy. If you haven’t heard any of those aforementioned bands, get on that and you’ll see why Ryan is right at home here on Washed Up Emo. His time in punk, years at Deep Elm Records, and the time I spent working Liars Academy is discussed at length. Ryan’s honest reflections on his time in music both good and bad showcase how this little genre pokes its head out even after you left it in the drawer for years and years. I’ve honestly wanted Ryan on since the day I started this podcast so on the even of 10 years of this podcast, no better friend could be had and I think you’ll agree.   Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. • #200 - Adam Lazzara (Taking Back Sunday)

    29/09/2021 Duração: 01h16min

Today we welcome a very special guest and friend, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday. It’s fitting he’s number 200. I met him early on in my days at college when I’d see him at shows all the time. He was in high school at the time and it was something where no matter the show, Adam was there. During the podcast, we catch up on live and I bring up one of the worst shows he’s ever played at a band that coincidentally led to him moving up to Long Island. As someone who was a fan of him before the band, it was this magical thing. Someone from around here in North Carolina is going to live in NYC? Wow! As the years past and releases, we’d spare a minute or a quick hello as life runs by. It’s fitting for 200 because we’re coming up on 10 years of the podcast and 14 years of washed up emo. You tend to look back and remember who was there next to you at the beginning. Adam was that person. It feels good to know Adam is a part of this series and like emo, no matter if you showed up today or 20 years ago, it’s all he

  • #199 - Jonathan Fuller (Denali, Engine Down, Sleepytime Trio)

Today on the podcast, we welcome Walter Schreifels. Walter has been in some of the most influential hardcore bands including Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Quicksand, Rival Schools and his label he ran, Some Records. We also touch on emo, post-hardcore and his life today. Walter couldn’t have been nicer during this interview. He’s still huge in the scene and continues to make music for the masses. Life pro tip. • #197 - Michael Malarkey (Actor, Musician)

    19/07/2021 Duração: 01h21min

Today on the podcast, we welcome actor and musician Michael Malarkey. You may know Michael from his acting roles in the Vampire Diaries to Project Blue Book. His most recent album “Graveracer” was released in early 2020. Michael is a huge fan of emo, punk, hardcore, and screamo. My favorite quote was fitting to many that have a love of something not their job and hope they can do one to help the other. He said, “I’m a musician with an acting problem.” Both are great and it was an honor to have Michael be a part of this podcast. If you’re a fan of him or not, or know too much or not enough, you’ll enjoy this episode.   Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Plus, we went track by track through his latest Owen record "The Avalanche."   Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. • #195 - Jim Ward (At the Drive-In, Sparta, Sleepercar)

    07/06/2021 Duração: 01h10min

Today we welcome musician Jim Ward. You may know him from At the Drive-In, Sparta, or Sleepercar. He has a new solo record called “Daggers” out June 11th. If you’re listening to this in the future, I’m sure it’s on whatever streaming service or implant we all have to enjoy our favorite tunes. Jim was an absolute blast to talk to and someone I’ve been wanting on the podcast since I started this back in 2011. We spoke a lot  about his life weaving in music, touring, and what he’s learned over the years. Jim pulled zero punches and was hopeful in his words that resonated deeply with me listening back. If you’re a fan of him or not, you’ll dig this chat.    Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #194 - Johnathon Ford (Unwed Sailor, Roadside Monument)

    17/05/2021 Duração: 01h42min

Today, we welcome Johnathon Ford from Unwed Sailor and Roadside Monument. Johnathon and I have been trying to make this happen for years as we’d connect via mutual friends or at a show. Most recently in Brooklyn back before the pandemic we ended up talking for a long time after an Unwed Sailor show and it went places where you don’t expect a conversation to go and all the sudden you get a text or the bartender goes, “yea it’s closing time.” I wanted to do that again so I got Johnathon to come back on to talk about his music career from his early bands to Roadside Monument and his latest album “Truth or Consequences” that is out now on Spartan Records. As with any guests that got to take in the 80s, I was smitten with his stories of Seattle, Tulsa, and what laid the groundwork for his musical taste, ideals, but also where he is today. If you’ve never heard of either band, they are bedrocks for this scene and worth your time to dive into. If you have and looking to hear Johnathon speak at length about his life,

  • #193 - Brian Fallon

    10/05/2021 Duração: 01h07min

Today we welcome singer/songwriter Brian Fallon. You may also know him from The Gaslight Anthem or The Horrible Crowes and many other bands. Brian and I caught up to chat about finding music, his love of emo and influences that many may not realize. From The Gloria Record, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, I Hate Myself… these all shaped his writing from his time in a band and solo career. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with Brian about his life in music so far and there’s plenty more ahead that will always include some influences from our scene both old and new.    Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. 19/04/2021 Duração: 01h17min

Today we welcome Brian Sokel from Franklin and AM/FM. Franklin were a Philly area band from 1992-2000 that had releases and played with many of your favorite bands during that time. Brian was the guitarist of Franklin and put out a bunch of great music that runs the gamut from post to dub to low-fi indie. With releases on Tree, Workshop, File 13, etc and then with Polyvinyl, for his days with the project AM/FM, Brian has spent time putting together photos and audio online for whoever may stumble upon this. It’s how we met today. We also get to spend time talking about his neighbor Atom from Atom and his Package fame. Let’s hear it for “E is for Enya.” Here’s how to learn more. Check out the website GoKidGo.org and GoKidgo.Bandcamp.com. That’s the way to check out all the music and find more stories about this era and scene around Philly.   Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Today, we welcome Mario Rubalcaba from Clikatat Ikatowi! Mario has been in many bands from Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, and Off!. As with the podcast, we spoke a lot about his time skating, the formation of Clikatat Ikatowi and the surrounding scene of San Diego that shaped him. A lot of great stories from Mario about his time in music. An absolute legendary drummer and so happy he took some time to chat about his time in music with me.   Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network.
