What happens when a theology professor sits down to have a deep conversation with Jesus? They end up having a late-night mental boxing match about what it means to be “born again”. Jesus tells the Bible scholar that, in effect, you can memorize books of the Bible, tithe generously to the Lord, live a moral life, believe in God, and sit in church every week until you die and have your funeral in a church and still go to hell if you are not born again by the Holy Spirit. Jesus showed up at the Temple, got angry, made a whip, and started sending money flying and people running? Why? Because the religious leaders did not care about worship, Jesus, or relationships. This week Jesus the Lamb turns into Jesus the Lion for some good reasons we will study together.

Do you ever wonder what eternity will be like? Have the cartoonish images of diaper wearing chubby baby cherubs sitting on fluffy clouds playing harps forever got you less than excited for eternity? The truth is that Jesus’ miracles revealed His eternal Kingdom. His first miracle was making wine at a wedding party which will likely upend a lot of what you have wrongly been told heaven will be like.

How do you discover God’s will for your life? Jesus first disciples had jobs they worked and a life course they had plotted. All of that changed, however, when Jesus came along and asked them to follow Him. The same is true for Jesus’ followers today. By understanding who Jesus is and what life in relationship with Him looks like, you too can begin to uncover God’s will for your life and walk with Jesus.

How do we really come to understand ourselves? That question, perhaps more than any other, dominates our thinking as we use personality tests and other tools to discover the mystery that is me. There is a man named John the Baptizer whom Jesus called the greatest man who has ever lived. People tried to figure out who John was, and he said that the only way to really understand oneself is to first understand Jesus. In that day, like ours, many people were making the mistake of looking at themselves too much and looking at Jesus too little. If you want to understand who you are, the first thing you need to understand is who Jesus is.

Who knows you best? When Jesus walked the earth, he had a best friend named John. John was an eyewitness to Jesus entire ministry, and no one knew Jesus better than John. Long after Jesus had returned to heaven, the other disciples had all died, and the last eyewitnesses to Jesus’ were reaching the end of their life, John sat down to write about his best friend and Lord, Jesus Christ. At breakneck speed that strains human understanding, John starts by telling us that Jesus is our Eternal God, Creator God, Polarizing God, Savior God, Human God, Only God, and Relational God. Why? Because if you want to understand who God is you have to start with Jesus!

After years of praying, weeping, and waiting, the elderly and barren Elizabeth rejoices at the birth of her son, John. His name means God is gracious and was chosen by the angel Gabriel. In response, John’s father Zechariah ends his nine months of muteness by blessing God in worship. The entire scene is one of great joy and life as the Holy Spirit fills Zechariah to prophecy over the life of his son who was chosen to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. A bit further into Luke’s gospel, and we hear Jesus saying that John was the greatest person (besides Himself) who has lived in the history of the world. His brief six months of public ministry literally changed the world because God’s power was at work in and through him.

As a single, pregnant, poor teenager from a small rural town who is betrothed to be married but a hundred miles away from home without any indication that her parents are involved in her life, Mary has a lot she could be worried about. But, rather than worrying, she spends her time worshipping. In so doing, she reminds herself who God is and why she can trust him for the future of herself and her unborn baby, Jesus. In so doing, she serves as an example for everyone in stressful, fearful, and anxious situations how to replace worrying with worshipping.

This week, we see Mary and Elizabeth meet for the first time as pregnant women. Mary is young, unmarried, and carrying Jesus in her womb. Her relative, Elizabeth, is old, married, and carrying John the Baptizer in her womb. Mary makes the roughly 100-mile journey to see Elizabeth, and upon meeting amazing things happen. John is filled with Spirit, as is his mother, and they worship the unborn Jesus. Furthermore, we see that Dr. Luke the author, guided by the Holy Spirit, clearly speaks of life beginning in the womb and God saving and calling people even from their mother’s womb.

This week, we meet a young, poor, and rural engaged couple that were chosen by God to be the parents of Jesus Christ. We see a pattern in their life of receiving a word from God, bringing Jesus home, and accepting God’s will for our life especially when it varies from our dream for our life.

This week, as the historical details surrounding the entrance of God into human history as Jesus Christ unfolds, we are introduced to some rich personalities. Herod is the definition of pride and power. Elizabeth and Zechariah are the picture of humility and integrity. And, God works through natural means (the dice roll in Zechariah’s favor) and supernatural means (sending the angel Gabriel) to accomplish his will. All of this is to set the stage for the coming of John the Baptizer who leads the parade preparing the people for the coming of his cousin Jesus.

This week we begin our two-month holiday sermon series, The Boy Who is Lord. Together, we will explore the first two chapters of Luke. This week Pastor Mark introduces us to the Luke and the incredible historical research he undertook to uncover the truth about Jesus Christ.

After you have cried to God, freaked out a bit, and begged God what do you do when the future you were fearing becomes the life you are living? That is precisely the pain of Habakkuk. In the final chapter of his tear soaked book, we discover 3 things that God uses to move us from routine to real relationship – prayer, Bible study, and worship. In this very practical sermon, we will examine how to really pray, really study, and really worship by getting out of our routine relationship with God and entering into a real relationship with God. Some of us don’t do these 3 things, and others of us need to learn to do them in a fresh way to grow our faith.

If God is all powerful, all knowing, and all good why is there suffering and evil? This is one of the most practical, painful, and problematic questions that every generation asks about God. And, this is the same question that Habakkuk brought to God for an answer. If this were a multiple choice test, here are the possible answers: There is no God – Atheism God is not all powerful – Finite Godism God is not all knowing – Evolutionary Godism, Open Theism God is not all good – Pantheism, Panentheism There is no suffering and evil – subjectivism, pluralism God is not done yet so live by faith, not sight – Christianity Which does Habakkuk choose? Which will you choose?

What if God jumped in to take a talk radio call and answer a few questions from a ranting, bewildered, and frustrated believer who was fed up with all the moral decline, governmental corruption, and political shenanigans in the world? This, in essence, is exactly what happened to a man named Habakkuk who was frustrated that the bad guys were winning while the “good” guys were weeping. The honest to God book he penned recounts God’s answers to his questions about “why” things were so bad and “how long” God would let the world circle the drain before getting involved. In this first sermon in Habakkuk, we examine what it really means to live by faith – especially when you are frustrated with a world that is falling apart.

That Day! At some point, everyone finds themselves with a day, unlike any other day. That day is the day that someone or something that is against you is bigger than you and is in the process of defeating you. On that day, the doctor says that there is nothing more they can do to treat the cancer, the lawyer says that the divorce is final, or the nurse says it’s time to pull the plug because the person you love has seen their earthly life come to an end. When that day comes, you can either get frustrated with God or bring your frustrations to God as an ancient believer did in the tear-stained journal he kept. Through lamenting, we learn to grieve like Jesus and grow to be more like Jesus.
