Host Deardra Shuler talks to Choir Director Shimmy Jiyane (GEE-ya-NEH), of the SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR who will be appearing at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, December 9 at 4pm.  The Choir‘s universal message of love, unity, and hope, along with its captivating melodic and harmonic wonder and awe-inspiring performances.  Formed in Soweto, South Africa in 2002 by choir directors David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, the ensemble comprised of some of South Africa’s greatest singers, blends elements of African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae, and American pop music. Their first album consists of Voices of Heaven,  Blessed, African Spirit, Live at the Nelson Mandela Theatre, Grace. Host Rhonda Terry interviews singer, actress, writer Dr Glory Van Scott at the top of the show.  Scott talks about her book Glory: A Life Among Legends, a powerful memoir that takes the reader from an early life whose innocence is cut short almost overnight, to Van Scott's dedication to the performing arts as a professional who would find herself at the vanguard of a new vision of African-American dance and theater securing its place as an original American art form.  Then talks with Art Historian Sherry Turner DeCarava on the second half of the show regarding The Roy DeCarava Centennial Celebration wherein they discuss The Sweet Flypaper of Life, Roy's 1955 book with Langston Hughes.      

Host Deardra Shuler talks with singer Sarah Dash who will be doing 3 concerts in November in tribute to Aretha Franklin.  Sarah Dash has sung with some of the greatest names in pop, rock and R&B – try The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, The Marshall Tucker Band, Laura Nyro, The O'Jays, Wilson Pickett and Bo Diddley among others. She has appeared on shows with hundreds of renowned recording artists – from Keith Richards to Stevie Wonder. She is, of course, a founding member of Patti Labelle & The Bluebelles, morphing into Labelle in the '70s and has had her own hits with the dance music classics "Sinner Man" and "Low Down Dirty Rhythm." Host Deardra Shuler talks with singer/songwriter/model Amanie Illfated. Amanie Illfated is a 2-time nominated South Sudanese singer who is based in Toronto and carries the additional titles of producer, model, and activist. Her music consists of thought-provoking lyrics that are mixed with moody synths and fused with rhythmic, Reggae/Afrobeat inspired drums. She is known for her thrilling, energetic and captivating live shows; each consisting of charismatic dance segments and plenty of audience interaction. Amanie has been making her mark on the Canadian music scene and creating a sensational buzz in the United States, England, Scotland, Australia, Sweden and Denmark with her 2015 self-titled EP and her upcoming EP, ‘SATURN’. Deardra Shuler, host of Topically Yours, talks with drummer and entertainer, Sheila E.  Sheila Escovedo, aka Sheila E, is a percussionist, singer, author, actress, and was a protegee of Prince. Born into a musical family in the Bay Area of California, Sheila was influenced by her percussionist father Pete Escovedo, uncles Coke, Alejandro, Mario and Javier Escovedo, and her godfather Tito Puente. In 1977, she joined the George Duke Band as a percussionist and singer, appearing on several of the band’s albums. She also performed with Lionel Ritchie, Herbie Hancock, and Diana Ross. In 1983 she joined Marvin Gaye’s Midnight Love Tour as one of his percussionists. The following year, Sheila recorded with Prince.  She also wrote and co-produced her critically acclaimed 1984 breakthrough album, The Glamorous Life, which earned her two Grammy Award nominations.  Her album Iconic: Message4America was released in 1987 and features collaborations with Ringo Starr, Freddy Stone and George Clinton.
