Christchurch City Council could follow Environment Canterbury and Nelson City Council in declaring a climate emergency.The council's sustainability committee is discussing the idea today.Committee chair Vicki Buck told Chris Lynch it could then be put to a full council meeting on Thursday.She says nobody can put their hand on their heart and say the world isn't on the brink of an ecological and climate catastrophe.Buck says the cost of not taking action is profound.

An international relations specialist says social media giants need to be held to account.Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is in Paris for the Christchurch Call Summit, meeting with a number of countries to tackle dissemination of hate online, following the mosque attacks.International Relations specialist Professor Robert Patman told Chris Lynch companies like Facebook need to take responsibility for what they broadcast.

Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration Megan Woods is defending rebuild agency Regenerate Christchurch despite a wave of delays.  The agency most recently came under fire after spending almost two years and $500000 working on a strategy to deal with climate change in Southshore and South New Brighton before handing the project over to the city council with little to show for it.Minister Megan Woods told Chris Lynch she doesn't think the work will go to waste.She says Regenerate has a really important function of providing her advice when she is asked to use section 71 of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery act.

A Christchurch Transport Planner says the amount of cars expected on the road simply won't fit.This follows concerns from residents in the St Albans area about the influx of traffic the under-construction Northern Corridor will bring. Axel Wilke told Chris Lynch more people need to take the bus to keep Christchurch moving.

Climate change activist group Extinction Rebellion staged a protest outside the central city offices of Environment Canterbury on Tuesday and are pleased with the result.ECan chief executive Bill Bayfield has agreed to put the question of possibly declaring a climate emergency on the agenda for the next meeting. Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Grace Stainthorpe told Chris Lynch ECan declaring a climate emergency will show to all levels of government that this is being taken seriously and will allow them to really do their jobs of stewards of the environment they are supposed to be protecting.
