Rachel and Stephanie both grew up in Southern California and grew up to become elementary school teachers. They met in educational therapy graduate school and became close friends. They supported each other as they each opened their own education therapy practices. Prior to her work at Muse, Rebecca was a college instructor and founded another school based on the Reggio model in the Midwest. Her MUSE school is committed to child-centered curriculum and the social-emotional development of each child. MUSE has also pioneered a unique commitment to sustainability education and practices. This is our first ever edition of School of Thought Goes To The Movies, where we use our favorite movies to explore the world of education. Today we’re talking about Twelve O’Clock High, a WWII movie made in 1949 that explores the difficulties of leadership. It stars Gregory Peck and won two Academy Awards. This movie has been shown to soldiers and sailors in officer training school to develop them for the challenges of leadership.  We’ll discuss the ways in which leaders can get too close to the people they lead, how to turn around a place with a toxic culture, and how these leadership lessons apply to the classroom. What started as a community service club at the school has blossomed into an active organization with a strong track record of student leadership and community impact. Last year, their Tampon Tuesday project garnered widespread attention and support, and they received a #ICanHelp Digital4Good award at the Facebook Headquarters.
