In this episode of Real Talk about Real Trends in Workforce our guests will introduce Today’s Rosie, a new podcast that will discuss the origins of the Women in Nontraditional Careers (WINC) project in the Philadelphia region and what the benefits are for women who pursue these careers.  Nicole Fuller is a founding member of Women in Nontraditional Careers and will discuss why this work is her passion. Nicole started her career as a tradeswoman and is a long-time advocate for workers. She is now the Executive Director of PhilaPOSH, the occupational safety and health advocacy organization and serves on the WINC Steering Committee.   Nicole also co-chairs the WINC Outreach and Education Team with interviewer Miya McAfee.  Miya is a Youth Representative at Philadelphia Works who works to create career pathway programs for young people in Philadelphia’s high schools and career and technical education programs.

As the COVID-19 rate of infection slows and Pennsylvania plans to reopen, employers who were fortunate enough to transition their staff to remote work, are preparing for employees to return to the office.  In this episode of Real Talk about Real Trends in Workforce, Sheila Boornazian, VP of Human Resources and Administration at Philadelphia Works, discusses the role HR plays in economic recovery. Recognizing that returning to the office will come with substantial barriers to success, such as childcare access and mass transit fears, Sheila is hopeful that HR professionals can create an environment where employees feel safe and supported. To other challenges, she offers solutions and resources to help both businesses and employees get back to work.

Industry Partnerships connect employers, workers, and job training providers from a single industry to collaborate on improving the industry’s competitiveness and to address common workforce challenges.   The Hospitality and Entertainment IP at Philadelphia Works is in its convening phase, but already has garnered the attention of over 100 industry professionals. H. Patrick Clancy, President & CEO at Philadelphia Works joins the program to have a transparent conversation about how COVID-19 is impacting the local workforce in Philadelphia. Philadelphia Works, the City’s workforce development board, Comcast, one of the region’s largest employers, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia have partnered to pilot an innovative funding model called Pay-for-Success. Pay-for-Success aims to train Philadelphia residents for meaningful careers that pay a family-sustaining wage and correspondingly develops a viable talent pipeline for employers.   On this podcast episode of “Real Talk about Real Trends in Workforce,” Tyrone Hampton, manager of workforce system initiatives at Philadelphia Works, walks us through the new funding model, what stage of development the program is in, and outlines the projected outcomes.

Nicole Pumphrey, Deputy Director, Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians joins the program to discuss the International Professionals Program (IPP), a partnership between WC and PWI.  The program is first of its kind in the nation to be supported by federal workforce funding through Philadelphia Works Inc. and target foreign-trained immigrant professionals.
