Upside Down–Beatitudes: Hunger and Thirst
09/09/2018Discussion Guide Scripture memory: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6 Discussion Questions Describe a time when you were desperate for food or a drink. Were you longing for something specific or would any type of food or drink do? When Jesus says for us to be hungry and thirsty for righteousness, what do you think of? How does this beatitude point out what we are hungry for? Read Isaiah 55:1-2 and Psalm 42:1-2. How do these Scriptures, taken together with Matthew 5:6, help us better understand what it means to hunger and thirst for righteousness? In what ways do these verses ring true or not for you right now? The hunger and thirst spoken of in this Beatitude is specifically directed towards right relationships. Of the four listed: (creation, another human being(s), our inner self, God) which relationship do you long for the most rightness with? How so? Read John 4:13-14. Jesus promises to fill us with himself. In what way(s) do you need

Upside Down-Beatitudes: Meekness Is Not Weakness
02/09/2018Discussion Guide Scripture memory: Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:4–5 Describe someone who has consistently made you feel “like the most important person in the world.” How have they done this? Would you describe this person as meek? Why or why not? The words "grief" and "mourn" don't seem to go together with "blessing". Have you been and strengthened and comforted by the Holy Spirit during difficult seasons of your life? How do you need the comfort of the Holy Spirit today? Read Philippians 2:1-11. How do you see both Jesus' strength and humility on display in these verses? What is a current situation where you need the meekness of Jesus? Read Psalm 37:1-11. The command "do not fret" is repeated over and over. What does that show us about what it means to be meek? How does this shed light on Matthew 5:5? The promise of inheriting th

Upside Down–Beatitudes: Poor in Spirit
26/08/2018Discussion Guide Scripture memory: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 Poor in Spirit – those who know they have nothing with which to get the kingdom of God. In the Bible the opposite of poor is not rich, the opposite of poor is violent, “those who take their life into their own hands.” (Darrell Johnson, The Beatitudes, p. 34) What stood out or encouraged you in this Sunday’s sermon? When you consider the above definition of poor in spirit, what does that make you think and believe about your own life? Are you poor or are you “violent” – longing to take control in your own life? How so? Read Luke 18:9-14, who do you most identify with and what do these verses show us about how being poor in spirit affects how we approach God? The promise to being poor in spirit is the kingdom of heaven – forgiveness of sin, wisdom, power, hope, joy, etc. How does envisioning the Kingdom of Heaven and its promises help loos
