This past spring saw the eviction and subsequent displacement of over 200 tenants of the EMF Building, a rehearsal studio/arts complex in Cambridge, MA. Ben Simon, a former EMF tenant and organizer with Cambridge Artists Coalition, joined me to discuss the underlying issues that allowed this to happen, the activism that has arisen in response and whether it will ultimately have any effect. Anthony Gesa plays guitar in Gatherers, one of the best current bands in the oddly specific screamo/post-rock/post-hardcore milieu. He also works with the record label and management firm Party Smasher Inc. and spent the better part of two years on the road with The Dillinger Escape Plan as they traveled the world on their farewell tour. We talked about how love interests can guide our musical decision making for better or worse, the foolhardiness (or not?) of vocational training for the music business, and being warned not to walk around sightseeing in India. Dan Thompson sings and plays guitar in the post-hardcore band Sparrows, straight outta Ontario. Dan is Canadian but I don't hold that against him. Michael Pfohl is the brains behind the Tennessee-based emo band Secret Stuff, as well as a local promoter in Nashville and booking agent for other touring artists. He joined me in the studio (a.k.a. my living room a.k.a. One Sellin' Out Plaza) to discuss the legal nuances of hosting hundreds of punk shows at a place you rent, to encourage owning up to your lofty ambitions, and to convince me to invest in cryptocurrency (which I did and it has stressed me out ever since). Tim Williams was the vocalist, guitarist and primary creative force behind Our Lady, a now-defunct emo band from Springfield, IL that may not have been traditionally "big" but left a lasting impression wherever they went. Now Tim and his wife Molli own and operate Ritual Apparel, a clothing company and lifestyle brand for people involved in strength sports.
