  • 127 - Taylor Swift, Alpha Male Tea Party, Gone is Gone and Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou

    14/01/2021 Duração: 01h40min

New releases are still fairly thin on the ground, so Steve and Remfry continue to take a look back at some of the records they missed at the tail end of 2020, including Taylor Swift's evermore (15:30) Alpha Male Tea Party's Infinity Stare (54:15) and Gone is Gone's (deep breath) If Everything Happens For A Reason...Then Nothing Really Matters At All (72:18)  There is some brand new music however in the form of The Helm of Sorrow, a new collaborative EP from Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou (89:06) that's come hot on the heels of last year's debut collaborative full-length May Our Chambers Be Full.  Riot Act is delighted to be supported by Signature Brew. • 126 - Paul McCartney, Deftones, The Dirty Nil, Cazador

    07/01/2021 Duração: 01h59min

It's our first review show of 2021, but as is often the case at the beginning of the year, there aren't all that many new releases worth talking about, so instead, Remfry and Steve review some of the big hitters from the end of 2020 that they missed due to Album of the Year shenanigans, including new releases from Paul McCartney, Deftones, The Dirty Nil and Cazador.  Sadly things aren't as quiet on the news front as we pay tribute to two musicians who both passed away recently; underground hip-hop rapper MF Doom and Children of Bodom guitarist / singer Alexi Laiho. Plus we get political after photographs of Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer are circulated showing him to be one of the protestors at the US Capitol siege. • CA22 The Beatles - The White Album (Part 1)

    04/01/2021 Duração: 01h58min

It’s another Classic Albums series podcast. And in our most in depth look at a record to date we present a two part episode dedicated to The Beatles 1968 self-titled double album, commonly known as The White Album. In part one Steve and Remfry discuss The Beatles cultural significance, the daunting prospect of having to dissect the most revered and examined back catalogue in the history of popular music, the state of the world back in 1968, one of the most traumatic and politically charged years in modern history, before they get into the place that The Beatles found themselves in during that time. Looking into the shock death of the band’s manager Brian Epstein, the ever growing influence of Yoko Ono, their ill fated but prosperous trip to India and the studio sessions and the tense atmosphere that accompanied them, we set the scene before looking at the results of it all in part 2. • 125 - The Greatest Hits of Greatest Hits

    31/12/2020 Duração: 03h22s

It's the first show of 2021 and seeing as it's the beginning of the year, there's not all that much going on in terms of new releases (sorry The Dirty Nil, we'll cover you next week). So instead of our usual weekly review show, Steve and Remfry bring you something seasonal ... a look at 10 Best Of / Greatest Hits collections that we deem essential.  The criteria is to choose best of collections by bands who may not have an essential back catalogue as a whole, but have a great collection of songs all the same. Maybe they are missing that all killer, no filler definitive album, or maybe the band or artist themselves have an average discography when taken as a whole, but collect together their hits and you've got one almighty banger of an album. There's controversy aplenty, as Remfry picks a best of by one of the biggest metal bands of all time and Steve threatens anyone that doesn't like Motown.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. • S32 - Riot Act Christmas Single Bonanza (w/ Tom Peters from Alpha Male Tea Party)

    24/12/2020 Duração: 01h05min

SURPRISE!!! We've been beavering away behind the scenes for the last couple of months to create a Christmas Carol Medley performed by a veritable feast of guests to raise money for a fund setup by Music Venues Trust for venues that didn't receive funding from the UK Government bailout.  Remfry sat down with our arrange meister general Mr. Tom Peters from Alpha Male Tea Party, who has painstakingly arranged four carols together for our band of uber-musicians to perform. They talk about bringing all the disparate elements of the medley together, forming an uber group consisting of members of Alpha Male Tea Party, Delta Sleep, The Physics House Band and InTechnicolor to bring the instrumentals to our monstrous medley of festive fun.  Joining them on vocals are members of SikTh, Her Name is Calla, False Advertising, El Moono, Congé and Better Than Mending. They also discuss the choice of carols, Good King Wenceslas, Ding Dong Merrily On High, O, Little Town of Bethlehem and Silent Night.  https://riota

  • CA21 Foo Fighters - Self-Titled (Part 1)

    14/12/2020 Duração: 02h57min

For the first part of this double Classic Albums series we take a look at the humble beginnings of Foo Fighters and how Dave Grohl went from ‘the goofy kid that played drums for Nirvana’ to frontman of one of the biggest bands in modern rock. There were tempered expectations for the 1995 self-titled album, written and recorded (almost) entirely by Grohl. Many critics seemed downright offended that a drummer (A DRUMMER!!!) would have the NERVE to step out from behind the drum stool and play guitar ... AND SING!! AT THE SAME TIME!! MADNESS! It didn't take long for Grohl to make those critics look rather silly and 25 years on, the songs on Foo Fighters' debut album (This is a Call, I'll Stick Around, For All the Cows, Alone + Easy Target, Exhausted) still sound brilliant, despite (or maybe even because of) their raw, ragged production. The self-titled album served as a reminder that fuzzed-up guitars, a sweet melody and above all else, great songwriting is really all you need to deliver an album that

  • S30 - Vlad Matveikov (Small Pond/InTechnicolor/Bad Pond Festival)

    10/12/2020 Duração: 01h28min

Remfry sat down for a lengthy, ramble chat with his good friend Vlad Matveikov to talk about the music industry at large and where we are at the end of 2020. They cover topics that have affected the industry at large this year, how Covid-19 affected the industry, the impact of livestreams and the ongoing debate about streaming platforms and how bands make money from their art.  Vlad is one of the founders of Small Pond, a record label, studio and practise space based in Brighton. Bands who have released music through Small Pond include CLT DRP, Bitch Falcon, Wild Cat Strike, Natalie Evans, The Physics House Band, Mutiny on the Bounty, Luo and Kint. Remfry asks Vlad about how he came to Brighton, build a recording studio and practise space from scratch with absolutely no previous building experience and setup Small Pond as a record label and successful venture that has helped to nurture some of the most talented, forward-thinking acts on the South Coast.  They also discuss Bad Pond Festival, an annual event

  • RR24 No Devotion - Permanence

    09/12/2020 Duração: 41min

Originally On Patreon - April 21st 2020 On this week's Rioteer's Review, suggested by Michael Perry, Steve and Remfry discuss the debut (and currently) only album by No Devotion, the collaboration cobbled together by 5 ex-members of Lostprophets and Thursday frontman Geoff Rickley. 03/12/2020 Duração: 02h21min

Could it really be that time of year again? Yeah, 2020 sucked for most of us, but good golly did we have an excellent soundtrack to accompany the gloom this year. Steve and Remfry count down their Top 20 albums of 2020 and kick things off with spectacular style with numbers 20 - 11. They also talk about their respective song and EP of the year in the first part of our end of year countdown.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. • S29 - Killer Be Killed (with Max Cavalera and Greg Puciato)

    01/12/2020 Duração: 01h04min

For this very special episode of Riot Act, Steve is joined by two of our collective favourites; Max Cavalera and Greg Puciato. Known for their individual work in bands like Sepultura, Soulfly, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Black Queen and Cavalera Conspiracy, the duo join us to talk about the second album from their most super of supergroups, Killer Be Killed. We hear about the formation of the band, that dates back to the last decade, the way in which Max and Greg roped in Mastodon’s Troy Sanders and Coverge’s Ben Koller, and how they finally feel that KBK is a proper band that are (fingers crossed) in it for the long haul. • CA20 System of a Down - Self-Titled (Part 1)

    30/11/2020 Duração: 02h13min

It’s another double Classic Album Series podcast, and this week we go in on one of the weirdest multi-platinum selling bands in history; Armenian/American metal oddities System Of A Down. In part one we look at the band's self-titled debut album from 1998. Starting with the formation of the band, and their various and wide ranging musical inspirations, we look at the nascent nu-metal scene that was building in LA around the time, their relationship with super producer Rick Rubin and the impact the band made when the record was released. Steve talks about his various experiences seeing the band around the time, and we touch on what happened in the scene when they vanished completely for 18 months after the record, which sets us up nicely for part 2! • 121 - Palm Reader, Billie Joe Armstrong, Hatebreed and Clutch

    26/11/2020 Duração: 02h36min

Steve's in a festive mood because it's Thanksgiving and nothing gets him feeling more jolly than celebrating the concentrated slaughter of millions of people... ahhh bliss! But there's genuinely something to celebrate as the long awaited 4th album from Palm Reader (41:32) is out. Remfry and Steve review that alongside new albums by Billie Joe Armstrong (1:27:45) Hatebreed (1:48:23) and Clutch (2:21:04) And we also correct our errors from last week when stating that there are no bands left to reform ... you've come back to us in your droves and we cycle through the bands you'd like to see reform who haven't done so yet.  We’re delighted to say Riot Act is supported by Signature Brew. • RR23 Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion

    25/11/2020 Duração: 37min

Originally On Patreon- April 14th 2020 In this Rioteer's Review, suggested by Max Ellis, Remfry and Steve discuss the 1992 sixth studio album by psychedelic 'grunge' underdogs Screaming Trees. They discuss the band's involvement in the Singles soundtrack, pour yet more worship upon Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan (as per) and attempt to get to the bottom of why Screaming Trees never 'hit big' in the same way as their contemporaries Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
