Appointed as HM Chief Inspector of Prisons in 2016, Peter is in the final months of his term of office and reflects on the role ‘shining a light on closed institutions’ and the career in the justice system that brought him to it. Peter joined the Metropolitan Police in 1977 and served in a variety of uniformed and detective roles in London, and in May 2002 he was appointed as Head of the Anti-Terrorist Branch at New Scotland Yard and National Co-ordinator of Terrorist Investigations. He has held a number of national roles since and in 2014 was appointed as the Education Commissioner for Birmingham with a specific remit to investigate alleged Islamist infiltration of schools.
