South Africa's parliament has passed a major education bill that could see parents face prison if their children are not in school. Under the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela), they could be jailed for up to 12 months if their children are truant, or if they are not enrolled when they reach school age. Bela also introduced a ban on corporal punishment in all schools. The DA says the bill disempowers schools, parents, and communities and fails to address one of the systemic challenges that impede quality education.

President William Ruto says Kenya is to end visa requirements to all African visitors by the end of the year. He says It is time they realise that having visa restrictions amongst ourselves is working against Africans. Only Seychelles, The Gambia and Benin offer entry to all African citizens without a visa. Africa's Visa Openness Index - which measures the extent to which each country in Africa is open to visitors from other African countries - most countries are making progress towards simplifying entry processes and dropping restrictions to some other nations. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says his country is willing to invest in gas and critical minerals in Nigeria, as he started a two-day visit to the West African country. Mr Scholz says that the European country looked to diversify its trade partners and expand economic partnerships in the energy-rich region. Mr Scholz is also pushing for cooperation with Nigeria to help tackle illegal migration from West Africa to Europe. President Tinubu sought the support of Germany in tackling insecurity and also working to turn the economy of Nigeria around.

Fidelity Bank, African Export-Import Bank and agribusiness firm, JohnVents Industries signed a $40m cocoa export deal at the Fidelity Bank International Trade and Creative Connect held in Houston, United States of America. The loan would be provided by AFREXIM Bank with Fidelity Bank acting as the local administrative agent. The Managing Director/Chief Executive Director, Fidelity Bank Plc, Mrs Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, says the tripartite loan signing ceremony demonstrates the size of the opportunity in the Nigerian cocoa market and its potential to meet the demand of off-takers in the US. Onyeali-Ikpe noted that the target for the expo was to close about $250m worth of deals.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, says the government needs to import construction equipment worth €1.2m to effectively perform rehabilitation works on the Eko Bridge in Lagos State. The minister says the deck on Eko Bridge would be opened for proper repair, hence the need to import the equipment. Umahi says lack of maintenance culture from the national level was the root cause of the deflection on the bridge, while also pointing out problems on the Third Mainland Bridge which was built in two sections 60 years ago.

Senator Ali Ndume has called on President Bola Tinubu to sign an executive order on unexplained wealth. Ndume, who is the lawmaker representing Borno South under the ruling All Progressives Congress, made the remark in the wake of a comment by retired Supreme Court Justice Musa Muhammad Dattijo over the level of corruption in the country’s judiciary. The lawmaker says he attempted to introduce some bills in that regard while saying there are laws in the UK and other parts of the world to tackle such issues. Ndume, says the level of unexplained wealth in the country especially among politicians and civil servants requires some laws to combat.

Saudi Arabia has confirmed that negotiations have resumed in the city of Jeddah aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan. The Saudi foreign ministry welcomed the resumption of talks between representatives of Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces group. It also urged them to adopt a ceasefire and protect civilians. More than 9,000 people have been killed and more than 5.5 million displaced since fighting broke out in April.
