    Niger has been forced to cut its budget by 40% over the impact of sanctions and suspension of aid after the 26 July coup. There are fears that the sanctions may worsen the economic situation in Niger - one of the world’s poorest countries. The military junta announced a 2023 budget cut from $5.3bn to $3.2bn, although details of the cuts are lacking. At least 40% of the West African country's budget support this year was expected to come from external partners.     The National Bureau of Statistics says Nigeria relied on foreign borrowing to boost its capital importation in the first six months of 2023. The National Bureau of Statistics on Nigeria Capital Importation says in 2023, total capital importation dropped by 30.42 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2023 to $2.16bn from $3.11bn, from the corresponding period of 2022. Foreign investments in the forms of loans grew by 17.43 per cent to $1.21bn in the first half of 2023 from $1.03bn as of the corresponding period of 2022. The NBS says in Q2 2023, other investments accounted for 81.28 per cent of total capital importation in Q2 2023, followed by Portfolio Investment with 10.37 per cent and Foreign Direct Investment with 8.35 per cent.

A joint East African bid from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania has also won the rights to hold the 2027 tournament. Morocco replaced Guinea, who was stripped of the tournament in October last year because of concerns about infrastructure and facilities. Morocco is jointly bidding for the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal. Patrice Motsepe, president of organisers CAF, says all of the options for both tournaments would have made Africa proud. He added the decisions had been based on the level of infrastructure made available by bids, including facilities, accommodation and hospitals.

  • North Korean Parliament Enshrines Nuclear Ambitions in Constitution

    North Korea’s parliament has unanimously moved to enshrine its nuclear programme in the country’s constitution. The state news agency KCNA explained that the new constitutional amendment would establish North Korea’s pursuit of a nuclear force as the basic law of the state. Kim called to accelerate the modernisation of nuclear weapons in order to hold the definite edge of strategic deterrence” against perceived threats, like the United States and South Korea. Kim says the North Korean nuclear force-building policy has been made permanent as the basic law of the state, which no one is allowed to flout with anything.
