    Niger's junta says it has reopened the country's airspace to commercial flights. Niger is more than twice the size of France and is the second-largest landlocked country in Africa, covering an area of 1,270,000 square kilometres Niger's rulers did not give an immediate explanation for the move to reopen the country's airspace. Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, says that Niamey hoped to reach a deal with ECOWAS. He however also underscored the junta's intention to defend itself if the bloc proceeds with its threat to mount a military intervention.

A total of 7.76 million people face catastrophic levels of need, but resourcing shortfalls mean emergency food assistance will now be prioritised for 3.2 million people who face the highest levels of food insecurity. Makena Walker, acting country director for the UN’s World Food Programme says the simple fact is that there are not enough resources available to the humanitarian community to meet the needs in South Sudan.
