President Cyril Ramaphosa says an independent inquiry has found no evidence that South Africa supplied weapons to Russia. The panel rejected claims made by the US ambassador to South Africa that a Russian ship was loaded with ammunition and arms in Cape Town last December. Mr Ramaphosa says it had damaged the nation's currency and reputation. "The panel found that there was no evidence to support the claim that the ship transported weapons from South Africa destined for Russia," the president said in a televised address to the nation on Sunday. The inquiry found instead that the Russian cargo ship had delivered a consignment of weapons from Russia to South Africa, ordered in 2018.

The head of the military junta in Gabon, Gen Brice Oligui Nguema, is due to be sworn into office as the interim president of the country. The army toppled President Ali Bongo shortly after he was declared the winner of a disputed election. The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency stressed that NEMSA would ensure that all electricity meters and instruments deployed in the sector were of the right standard. The Managing Director, of NEMSA, Aliyu Tahir, stated that meter upgrade is a one-time process and subsequent energy token purchases will continue as usual after the upgrade has been completed.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, explained that all efforts to formalize unlicensed miners into cooperatives have proved abortive. He further stated that the ministry will review all mining licenses in the country as part of its transformation agenda. Other transformation agendas listed by the minister are the formation of the Nigerian Solid Minerals Cooperation, joint ventures with mining multinationals, setting up of mine police/task force, and generation of data for solid minerals in Nigeria.

Malaysia has rejected the latest edition of the ‘standard map of China’ that lays claim to almost the entire South China Sea, including areas lying off the coast of Malaysian Borneo. Tensions have been rising in the strategically important waters as China has become increasingly assertive in its claim despite a 2016 international court ruling that its so-called ‘nine-dash line’ was without merit and superseded by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Malaysia noted the new map, which clearly depicts the nine-dash line, showed China’s unilateral maritime claims and that they overlapped with Malaysia’s claims of its states of Sabah and Sarawak.
