That’s a question I ask clients and continue to ask myself. When I was a little girl, I most wanted to be seen for who I really was. I wanted to explore my curiosity and reach for the stars. Through no fault of their own, my parents didn’t understand. I was often left feeling invisible.  But inside I knew I had tremendous value to share with the world.  Can you relate? My truth was revealed when realizing that my purpose is to use leadership development to help people see who they are at the core of their being, without any societal labels, titles, or expectations. The story behind stepping out...   Amy Pence-Brown is a writer, independent curator, artist, historian, gardener and preservationist in Boise, Idaho. She has a master’s degree in art & architectural history and has worked at many museums and has juried and curated numerous exhibitions. Pence-Brown has written for several local & national publications, including the Idaho Arts Quarterly, Boise Weekly, Mamalode, and Treasure Valley Family Magazine. She currently works for Preservation Idaho and serves the children and youth of her community as a mother of three, a Junior Master Gardener leader, on the Vista Neighborhood Association Energize our Neighborhoods project, and as both Volunteer Coordinator & School Garden Coordinator for Hawthorne Elementary School. She loves taco trucks, polka dots, bluegrass music and Dr. Pepper LipSmackers.

Many youth today, especially at-risk teenage girls, are lacking role models. They are overwhelmed with the struggles of coming from broken homes where drugs and poverty are prevalent, survival is a constant concern, and options seem limited or non-existent. Programs across the US, including right here in our hometown of Nevada City, are uniting these girls with mentors to build confidence, teach social change skills, provide authentic and positive relationships, and reshaping their and our future for the better.
