Franz and Scream were the last band to record at the the legendary Inner Ear Studio in DC and that recording will be releasing in the Fall of 2023 on Dischord Records. The album, titled DC Special, features cameo performances by many DC legends and is a beautiful grand finale for the legendary Inner Ear. In our conversation we talk about various gigs Franz has had, amazing experiences touring and playing music, and the day to day grind we dig into so that we are able to remain creative and make music. In 2010 the band reunited and has been going strong since, touring Europe and the UK regularly. In May/June 2023 UKJ will be touring the United States for the first time since 1995. As the young founder of Shrapnel Records, Mike Varney helped elevate the shred guitar movement as it grew and flourished through the 80s and gained niche celebrity throughout the guitar world through his labels and a column he wrote called Spotlight which highlighted local guitar heroes from around the country and world. Many of the artists Varney as worked with remain active to this day and are some of the biggest names in guitar music. Malmsteen, Gilbert, Friedman, Howe, Macalpine.
