Jacob Kirkegaard joins us for a highly interesting discussion on birth, death and what goes on in between. Jacob’s recordings of the death process "Opus Mors," is a new level for sound capture and we get into the thought and process behind this work. We also talk about his recordings in Chernobyl, waste management facilities, glaciers, geysers and much more. We can’t thank Jacob enough for taking time out of his trip to have this conversation.

Pure Japanese harsh noise was called for this week, so what better cassette to dig into than Government Alpha "Erratic"? Released in 1996 on his own Xerxes label, this tape sets the tone for what was to come for Government Alpha. At times unsettling, at other times brutal, and at all times astonishing, "Erratic" is a high mark for 90s noise. Fall into the vortex with Government Alpha.

Suzy Poling (Pod Blotz) joins us for an incredible discussion about her sound and art. Suzy is an old friend of all of ours and recently went through a very harrowing ordeal and we get into what happened and how her art has helped her through this and how it will affect her work going forward. A thoughtful conversation with an fantastic artist, we can’t thank Suzy enough for sharing her experience.

Ryan Martin joins us to pay tribute to Hermann Nitsch, who passed away April 18, 2022. Ryan met Nitsch a few times and tells us an incredible story of him and Genesis P-Orridge getting to visit Hermann at the Prinzendorf Castle. We discuss all aspects of his work and how his way of living life intensely can act as an inspiration to us all.

Shane English returns and brought with him possibly the most obscure album we’ve covered thus far — NSI “M Plays Havoc.” A huge mystery from 1980s France, this self released slice of industrial ambience is shrouded in fog. A friend of Shane’s was able to track down a member of NSI and supplied us with some info and history behind this hidden project.

It’s our first episode covering an album in a while, and we landed on Iugula-Thor "Processcenes." Originally released on BloodLust! as part of their classic tape series, Iugula-Thor’s unique and personal brand of PE carries a sinister stare. This release, along with other Iugula-Thor material, is based on the Process Church of the Final Judgement, so we also go into the history of the Process and dedicate a good chunk of this episode to that discussion. We get a terrific look at operating a magazine in the 80s and 90s as Daniel Plunkett of ND Magazine sat down with us. ND started in 1982, stemming from the mail and experimental art world and moved into industrial, noise, and many other islands of sound. We get some great stories of not only putting together a magazine, but also booking John Duncan, putting together a cassette network event, and much more. In addition to having run ND, Daniel currently owns and operates End of an Ear record store in Austin, still supporting the world of underground sound.

Nico Vascellari (Ninos Du Brasil, Codalunga) was in Los Angeles, so we jumped at a chance to have a talk. We get into running a space in a very small Italian town, doing a multi week tour of private shows, enacting a 24 hour performance, navigating the underground, and more. Cassette culture pioneer Al Margolis of Sound of Pig and If, Bwana joins us today to take a look back at the glorious days of 80s DIY noise. Al shares stories from back in the day and how the cassette network operated. Sound of Pig was one of the most important US tape labels and its legacy still looms. Its another mandatory noise history lesson from one of the original trouble makers.

One of the pioneers of environmental recording, Lopez has traversed many states of sound and he fills us in on his entire history. We get into his technique, process, and thoughts behind his work. A truly unique individual and an inspiration to countless artists, Francisco lets us all in to his hidden world.

Jeph has been going since the early 80s and we get into everything from his use of field recordings, made up words, and philosophy on listening. Erik Hoffman was cool enough to have us to his home to discuss two landmark Ground Fault CDs in the field recording realm: Eric La Casa "The Stones of the Threshold" and Lionel Marchetti "Portrait D’Un Glacier." Erik relays some thoughts on the albums as well as working with each artist. We get into the importance of field recordings, where they can take you, and how they fit into the noise world.

We were thrilled to have Sam Rosenthal of Projekt Records, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, and more join us to head down atmospheric dark ambient branches. Sam has been operating since the early 80s and shares his thoughts on his own work, the artists that were part of the label, and how the music landscape has changed. The world lost a force of nature this week with the passing of Tom Smith. We are putting up a To Live and Shave in LA 7” episode that was recorded a few months ago, as well as a few words from Mike at the top. A proper tribute will follow in the future. Tom Smith forever.
