  • Crash and Ride: Episode 9 - Jonny 8 Track

    05/05/2019 Duração: 01h09min

While I was at SXSW back in March I spoke with Jonny 8 Track! Former drummer for Spiritualized, now a solo artist! We talked about growing up in a small, grey English town! We talked about struggling with the ups and downs of working as a musician! It was a good talk! You can check out Jonny's work here: https://news.chickenranchrecords.com/tag/jonny-8-track/ You can check out the whole Bialetti struggle here, if you were curious about what I was ranting about in the intro: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/10/28/trouble-brewing-classic-italian-moka-pot-coffee-pods-dominate/

  • Crash and Ride: Episode 8 - Gus Engstrom

    28/04/2019 Duração: 01h46min

Gus Engstrom is a musician and promoter from Charlotte, NC. He's an old friend and a good soul! He plays in the band Power Take Off and has long been a promoter and supporter of the Southeastern noise rock and punk scene. Gus had a late-life outburst of anxiety attacks and has spent years combating his anxiety and learning to manage it. • Crash and Ride: Episode 7 - Anthony Aparo

    21/04/2019 Duração: 01h56min

For Episode 7 I interviewed Anthony Aparo! He's an insanely talented singer/songwriter from Atlanta! I met him when I mixed a record he made when he was barely 18 years old! It's still pretty great! He's now a producer and engineer in his own right! He plays almost every instrument! Sort of like Prince, but white and depressed!   You can check out an upcoming single from his band Improvement Movement here:   https://chunklet.bandcamp.com/album/jan3-b-w-i-know   You can also hear more Improvement Movement songs on their Bandcamp page:   http://improvementmovement.bandcamp.com/   And here's the record I mixed for them back in the day: https://mrmustache.bandcamp.com/

  • Crash and Ride: Episode 6 - Noelle Shuck

    14/04/2019 Duração: 01h13min

Noelle Shuck is guitarist and vocalist for the Athens, GA-based punk band SheHeHe. We had a great conversation about punk rock, looking out for your friends and comrades who might be depressed, and about sexism in music. It was one of the more lighthearted interviews we've done, I had a really nice time talking to Noelle!    You can check out SheHeHe's music on their Bandcamp page: https://shehehe.bandcamp.com/music   SheHeHe is playing in Athens on May 12th at the Hi-Lo Lounge. I will see you there!

  • Crash and Ride: Episode 5 - Grant Curry

    07/04/2019 Duração: 01h42min

This is a heavy one. Grant and I both toured constantly in the '90s, and we really treasured the times our paths would cross on the road. We met while he was living in New Orleans, and we've been in touch almost constantly ever since. Grant is the bassist for Pleasure Club, Ballroom Dance is Dead, and a dozen other projects. He's an engineer and producer, and a good friend. He's dealt with suicidal ideation since he was just a kid, and chronic depression, fatigue, and anxiety his entire life. We talk about drugs, depression, divorce, diabetes, and The Tunnel. This one got right at my heart. I hope it moves you, too. • Crash and Ride: Episode 4 - "Imposter Syndrome" with Faiz Razi

    31/03/2019 Duração: 01h41min

It's our special April Fools edition of Crash and Ride, our interview with Faiz Razi! Faiz contacted me specifically asking if we could do an episode on Imposter Syndrome. Faiz is one of the most accomplished men I know, and yet somehow feels inadequate and is haunted by a sense that his achievements are hollow and fraudulent. We also talk about being a brown person in the largely white world of indie rock, and what being culturally Muslim in America means in 2019.   Here are some of the bands and art projects Faiz has created:   Nobody Cares About Your Stupid Art Project (dot com) http://nobodycaresaboutyourstupidartproject.com/   Small Awesome: https://smallawesome.bandcamp.com/   Danger Adventure: https://dangeradventure.bandcamp.com/album/double-phoenix   Faiz Zeppelin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuls-Da4orM   Musical Chairs: http://nobodycaresaboutyourstupidartproject.com/2010/musical-chairs-two/   Nomadic Studio: https://issuu.com/kerble/docs/catalogbigsmall

  • Crash and Ride: Episode 3 - Phil Smith

    25/03/2019 Duração: 01h31min

March 24, 2019 - 9:51pm, EasternTime: Phil Smith is one of the co-hosts of the fantastic podcast The Drummers Weekly Groovecast. He's also an outstanding musician and teacher. He's MY drum teacher. When I told him I was doing a podcast about mental health and musicians, he said "I really want to come talk to you," which surprised me, because he always seemed to be one of the most upbeat and together guys in the room. Now I know the whole story, and man, was it illuminating. Our interview got interrupted by my dogs several times! I was kind of a tired and distracted mess, and yet somehow we got a great interview!  Here are some links you might be interested in after hearing this podcast: I'm providing a link to the Drummers Weekly Groovecast interview with Dr. Howard Schubiner, an episode we specifically mention in the interview- https://tinyurl.com/y49z9e5m And here is a link to the Drummers Weekly Groovecast main page- http://www.drummersweeklygroovecast.com/ I'm a big fan and I'd strongly suggest you subs

March 16, 2019 - 11:35pm, Central Time: Tierney Tough is the bassist, vocalist, keyboard player, and half of the amazing writing team that drives the Orlando band The Pauses. We took a break from hurtling from gig to gig at South by Southwest and had a great conversation. We talked about hired gun gigs, dealing with loneliness, how much we love dogs, and so much more.

  • Crash and Ride: Episode 1 - Jake Cregger

    25/03/2019 Duração: 01h46min

This is the first Crash and Ride interview. We talked with Jake Cregger of the bands Triac, Multicult, and the Arkaics. We talked about how music saved his life, about stress eating, and about not spending all day watching Charlie Chaplain films in your pajamas if that's something that triggers your anxiety.  This is the first Crash and Ride interview.
