This episode is the first in a thrilling trilogy ( a “Thrillogy”) in which Amber, Kenny, and returning guest Echo do a 3-person Cube draft, with each episode featuring a 1v1 best of 3 games match. So we’re looking through a romantic history of Magic to find our favorite fan ships as well as subjecting Amber to a game show quiz concerning the truly disturbing history of love throughout the history of the game’s story. This actually leads to a good discussion about how (not) to do romance in your fiction.

A wise designer once said that Magic is not a game, but many different games united by a core game engine. Let’s see what this baby can do! We’re taking a look at some of the weird and wild alternate ways that you can play this game, from Mini Masters to Mini Cubes, from Planechase to Poker. Kenny starts to look into the idea of building his own Mini Cube, and Amber poo-poos it. But! She is kind of interested in something called a Back Draft? Give ‘er a listen!

You bet your ass we’ve got affinity for artifacts. Red and Blue don’t agree on a whole lot, but one thing we do both love are those sweet, sweet (mostly) colorless spells. Are you BEAST enough to ENTER THE COMBAT PHASE??? We certainly aren’t. This week Amber and Kenny do a Cube Draft, and they both draft extraordinarily medium decks, but hey, it makes for good competition. Mild spoilers include the following: questionable Toni Braxton song parodies, Amber not drafting red or white, Kenny not drafting blue, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria!

The plane for the fall set was announced a short while ago—Throne of Eldraine promises to be a magical land of fairy tales, knights, royalty, and enchantment. But so far all we really have to go on are a few pieces of amazing art. Who better to predict the future of what Wizards will do with this set than an absent-minded blue mage and his frothing, foaming, fire-flinging friend?

Take a walk on the wild side…of nutrition! As our mages once again duel for Cube Draft supremacy, enjoy the relaxing sounds of Amber massacring an apple and singing about sugar snap peas. Amber and Kenny are both moving into unknown territory as the Blue Mage drafts goblins and the Red Mage drafts control. So which strategy is truly the best? Core Set 2020 hath descended upon us, and we wanna TALK about it. Amber actually went to the prerelease event and had a grand old time showing off her new skills and dominating the fools who pulled up to the table with her. We’re also talking about some of our favorite new cards from the set. SPOILER WARNING: Amber’s list contains a red card, and Kenny’s list contains a blue one.

It’s a knock-down, drag-out, white-knuckle, club-thumpin, country-bumpkin, punkin-chunkin grudge match between two mages hungry for the crown. Amber is fresh off a cubic victory and she doesn’t plan on giving it back anytime soon. Kenny has plans of his own, though, but does he have what it takes to win what became our longest Combat Phase to date?
