Radio Gag - The Gays Against Guns Show

We explore the role guns play in the suicide epidemic that is occurring in the U.S. We'll discuss suicide in the military, the police force, and as a national epidemic. We'll also interview both Jennifer Michael Hecht, author of "Stay: A History of Suicide and the Arguments Against It," and Cathy Barber, creator of Means Matter, a campaign created to promote suicide prevention groups that work to reduce a suicidal person’s access to lethal means of suicide.

This week's Radio GAG show brings you a round-up of the weekly news from the gun violence prevention movement and a special focus on Assassinations. What motivates these killings? Political gain? Profit? Revenge? A desire for notoriety?

On this week’s show, your hosts Tricia Cooke and Josh Tjaden examine “Creativity Over Tragedy”- Tools of Destruction as a Means of Artistic Expression. This concept was borne out of Gays Against Guns own creative approach to combat gun violence - with an eclectic mix of genres that incorporates visual art, musical performances and other forms of expression. Like we do every week, we’ll also discuss how Gays Against Guns works to end gun violence and the gun industry’s chain of death, a weekly roundup of gun violence prevention news, how you can get involved with Gays Against Guns, and more!

This week on Radio GAG we talk about GAG's tactics of following the money - from banks that suport the NRA and the weapons industry, to stock market investments, to the now crumbling NRA business alliance. We will discuss past protests and campaigns that have led to real results such as our campaign against Fed Ex, and our new campaign for 2019 against Wells Fargo aka Wells FarNO! -- The NRA's bank that has given over 400 million bucks to the weapons industry since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012.

We take a moment to be thankful for our activist ancestors, and hear from seasoned organizers and new voices. We pay tribute to Harvey Milk, interview Ann Northrop from Queer nation and Act Up, and speak with Adam Eli Warner from Voices 4 about new voices in youth activism. We explore the Pennsylvania gun show actions GAGgers participated in during the 2018 summer months. Kimberly Miller, Jim Fouratt, and Kevin Hertzog were interviewed and shared their unique perspectives as a Human Being Marshal, Human Being, and the visionary. We explored the value of thoughtful persuasion, education, introspection and respect as effective activism tools. And, that even though there will be times when people leave conversations fuming or still opposed the important aspect is that all sides had an opportunity to be heard.

This week Radio GAG: The Gays Against Guns Show will address what it's like to visit gun shows. As you may know, gun shows are when groups of gun sellers get together and sell all kinds of weapons to the pubic, usually in ad hoc places in rural areas. GAG members traveled to Pennsylvania gun shows a few times during the summer to engage with gun consumers. Hear three GAGgers' unique perspectives: one who envisioned the action; another who silently participated as a Human Being; and the third who interacted as a marshal while distributing educational documents. We look at the role of guns in domestic violence. We discuss the Lautenberg Amendment aka The Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban - and attempts to keep guns away from abusers. We also discuss coercive control - where guns are left in a home to maintain the constant threat of deadly violence. Our In Memoriam this week is for Maria Teresa Macia.

As the consumer frenzy of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and holiday shopping mayhem kicks off, RADIO GAG looks at the Gift of Gun Violence. From the toy guns that are given to kids every year, to corporate free gun giveaways, we dig into the history and current state of gun gifting. And as Tamir Rice's 4th anniversary passes this week, we examine the real and deadly impact of putting these guns into circulation.
