To say the last week in Lightning hockey was brutal is an understatement - thankfully, their shutout win over the Sabres stopped the losing streak at 4 games. We give a quick rundown on the skid (including a defeat at the hands of Marty St. Louis' Canadiens), our thoughts on the 5-0 win over Buffalo and a look ahead to what's next. There's only 10 games remaining and Tampa Bay has yet to clinch a playoff berth. It's an unfamiliar spot for the team and fans as of late and the only thing we can say about it is, "just win!" The Lightning made a few moves before the trade deadline Monday and one of them had an immediate impact. Nick Paul scored a beauty in a losing effort to the Hurricanes, Tampa’s fifth loss in seven games. The good news is there’s plenty of time for them to clinch a playoff berth. The bad news? They’re contending with an even better Panthers team (we see you, Claude Giroux and Ben Chiarot) for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. The Lighting once again faced trials and tribulations in the past week as their scheduled game against the Devils had to be rerouted to Buffalo - while they were on the tarmac headed to New Jersey! Ryan Belec (Director of Team Services) was the MVP Sunday, getting everything sorted out. For a fun look at what Belec and the Lightning were dealing with, Bryan Burns has a great article up on http://tampabaylightning.com about the ordeal. Before they dealt with that adversity, they had to deal with a terrible loss Saturday to the Boston Bruins. However, all was not lost for the Bolts as they handily defeated Calgary in what CT calls "the most complete game they've played all season" and Blake Coleman got his Stanley Cup ring. Welcome to 2022 and welcome back to Lightning players Brayden Point, Erik Cernak and Andrei Vasilevskiy, who each missed some time for various reasons. The last 3 games haven't gone the way Tampa Bay would have liked, but we're not worried - it's a long season and match ups won't always be in the Bolts' favor. Point looks like he hasn't skipped a beat, while Vasy struggled against a very good Rangers team at Madison Square Garden Sunday. Speaking of Sunday in New York, we also touch on the Antonio Brown situation that happened 8 miles away from MSG at Metlife Stadium during the Bucs' win over the Jets. Tampa Bay vs. Las Vegas was the final game played heading into the extended holiday break and without coach Jon Cooper, the Lightning found a way to make it count. Sitting at the top of the NHL standings, the Bolts are getting help from all over the roster, which is important with the number of players out with injury. We also chat about their current win streak and the league shut down. The biggest news (aside from the break) is the announcement NHL players will not be participating in the 2022 Winter Olympics. Hear our thoughts on the announcement and how we feel about pros playing in any Olympics in this final episode for 2021 of Game MizConduct.
