Well, sure looks like the Tampa Bay Lightning studied a lot of video and remembered how skilled of a team they are. Game two of the Stanley Cup Semifinals was much different than the previous game. At times the Lightning looked like they dominated the New York Islanders. The behind the back passes by Kuch for a goal, the highlight reel stops by Vasy. It all added up to a better effort by the Bolts and a win! The series, now split, heads to the Coliseum on the Island. The Lightning have 8 down and 8 to go after clinching the series in a Game 5 shutout at the PNC Arena Tuesday night. Andrei Vasilevskiy was spectacular, stopping all 29 shots and Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said as much. The Lightning and Hurricanes scored 8 goals in the second period - 2 more goals than Las Vegas has scored in their entire series so far - and the Bolts come away with the win in Game 4 at Amalie Area. Stamkos and Kucherov each notched 2 goals a piece in the 6-4 victory to put Tampa Bay up 3-1 in the series. The “Storm Series” really lived up to its name in Game 3 as Bolts and Carolina both played pretty complete games - especially the Lightning. There is, however, one glaring exception: the mistakes. Whether it was a silly penalty or a turnover, Bolts’ mistakes led to Canes goals. The boys were * this * close to going up 3-0 in the series but the Hurricanes pulled out the W in OT. The Florida series that the NHL has been wanting for years was finally decided after six games. It was a hard-fought series and sometimes it looked like a boxing match instead of a hockey game. Nevertheless, the Tampa Bay Lightning were victorious and are moving on to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. When your first two starting goaltenders aren't doing it for ya and you face elimination what do you do as a coach? Well, Joel Quenneville went to his rookie third string goaltender and it worked! The kid looked good in net for the Panthers and looked really relaxed when facing one-timers from Stamkos and Kuch. Penalties killed momentum for the Lightning. The Panthers also did a good job at clogging up the neutral zone and keeping the Bolts from their very effective transition game. Two Lightning players received fines for their actions in game 5. Pat Maroon a $3K+ fine for unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the third period and Ryan McDonagh a $5,000 fine for cross-checking in the first period.   Now the series heads back to Tampa for another shot for the Lightning to eliminate the stinkin' cats. For the first time ever in the NHL Playoffs, there is an all-Florida playoff series. The Tampa Bay Lightning opened the first round of the NHL Playoffs in Sunrise taking on the Florida Panthers. If the first game is any indication of how this series is going to go it's going to be fast and physical.  Thankfully, however, both Stamkos and Kucherov returned to the lineup after being out with injuries. Kucherov had not played a game in 8 months since the Stanley Cup winning game last September.
