Joe is feeling antsy and wants us all to get our vaccines so we can go out and celebrate at a place like the Encore Casino, but some of us are feeling hesitant, and others among us are younger and still a long way from getting their shots. You won’t be blown away by wind this morning, but it is still very cold out for most of the rest of this week. The cold hasn’t stopped Joe from looking ahead to next week, where (provided the meteorologists are correct) we may see 60 degrees. America’s darling Dolly Parton has received her first dose of the moderna vaccine that she herself helped finance. Strap down your valuables and hold on to your hats, a mighty wind has gripped Boston and with today’s cold weather it can be downright painful operate outdoors. Stay warm out there and stay safe. Our patron pandemic platform ZOOM is of course reporting record year-to-year profits. Meanwhile the frustration of many Massachusetts seniors is beginning to boil over as they try and fail to book vaccine appointments while watching many younger people with pre-existing conditions get their shots. Starting up on a Monday is always a slow and deliberate process, but we’re all wide awake and ready to greet you, and lucky for you we’re in a good mood. The Golden Globe awards went down last night, and at least one winner appeared to be feeling no pain. Sox Spring Training may have restricted fan attendance, but that hasn’t stopped people from showing up to enjoy the show. Hey we made it to the weekend, thanks for kicking it off with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team! Chilly weather has returned after a brief thaw, but head on out to Castle Island starting today for a preview of Spring in the form of a Sullivan’s hot dog, and maybe even a few fried clams. With continued improvement in Covid-19 statistics, Massachusetts will loosen more social distancing restrictions in the coming weeks. This should include allowing up to 50% capacity at theatres and concerts, and 12% capacity at larger venues including pro sports. Safety is still important, so please be responsible as the rollback continues, and thanks for starting your weekend with GBH Radio.

We almost didn’t make it on the air today… details are within, but our trusty host Joe Mathieu had some issues entering the broadcast complex this morning and almost got shut out. We’re all feeling appreciative for a 40-something degree day yesterday, and it may in fact hit 50 degrees today depending on where you reside. More snow is in the forecast for today and tonight, and Joe is taking the OVER in the over/under snow totals game (he thinks we’re due for a big one). The temperatures dipped back down below freezing, but at least we don’t have any snow or ice to deal with up here… well, until tomorrow at least. The Celtics got a much needed win at the Garden last night, and that led to some important advice from coach Brad Stevens, advice that us early risers should probably heed. Plus we’re awaiting word here in Massachusetts for when the next group of seniors (65+) can start booking vaccines, and wonder if door-to-door reminders and enrollment might help. Warmer temperatures helped keep some icy weather at bay, at least in Boston. Out in metro west and the Worcester area your results may vary, as cooler temps have brought out the black ice. At least we’re used to it around here, things are more dire down in places like Texas where cold weather like this is a foreign concept.
